New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC), located in New Ulm in the south central region of Minnesota, is a full-service health care campus, providing an array of patient care services through its integrated clinic and hospital. With 500 employees, 41 physicians on staff, a full complement of visiting specialists and 35 staffed beds, NUMC serves more than 98,000 inpatients and outpatients annually.


  • Answers phone calls
  • Takes accurate messages
  • Refers calls to appropriate staff, and provides requested information
  • Warmly greets visitors and is responsive to questions
  • Receive referral information by phone and schedule assessments and admissions
  • Typing of patient and unit records, reports, and correspondence. Faxing correspondence
  • Coping of patient records and other materials as requested by staff
  • Verify insurance benefits for all new admissions and seek initial and subsequent authorizations, advise counselors of needed auths, and monitor ongoing utilization against auths
  • Provide needed information to the Central Billing Office to facilitate claims submission
  • Post charges to patient accounts
  • Resolve billing and reimbursement problems in cooperation with Patient Billing staff
  • Initiate DAANES forms for all admissions
  • Ordering of supplies as needed for unit operations
  • Arrange for guest speakers as needed according to the Program Schedule, following the unit's policy for outside speakers and orienting them to the department
  • Make meeting arrangements as requested by staff
  • Maintain organization of the nursing station area for the SA department
  • Collection of unit mail and distribution
  • Assist with admission process by reviewing content of patient packet and obtaining appropriate consents
  • Schedule appointments for patient for physician visits (including admission H&P), ancillary services, follow-up services, and community resources recommended in the patient discharge plan
  • Escort patients to appointments within the facility
  • Perform other duties assigned by Program Manager



  • High School diploma
  • Prefer completion of a course as Medical Secretary, Health Unit Coordinator, or similar educational program, including Medical Terminology  -OR- Equivalent experience in a smilier position at another health care organization
  • Need good organizational, communication, critical thinking, and team work skills
  • Knowledge of utilization management/insurance authorizations desirable
  • Previous work in a clerical/support position in a health care facility preferred
  • Work or knowledge of pre-authorization and utilization management a plus
  • BLS required

Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule
