Laboratory Care Technician

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection on various patient populations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving Fairview's goals. Physical Demands: sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 10lbs above shoulders, up to 35lbs waist level, up to 30lbs below the knees. Push/pull up to 20lbs. Carrying 15lbs. Balance. Stooping/crouching. Kneeling. Grasping with right hand and left hand. Finger dexterity. Reaching below and above shoulders. Reaching accross. Rotation sitting. Rotation standing. Bending at waist above 45 degrees. Operate motor vehicle. Talking in person, on the phone, with public. Hearing in person, on the phone, full hearing required. Vision near, far, color. Depth perception, accomodation, field of vision. Physical environment: noise, heat/cold, infectious disease, moving machinery, vibration, fumes/gases, human tissue/fluids, animal tissue/fluids, radiation, wet/humid environment. Chemicals, biohazard material, work outside. Mental demands: freq people contact, irregular schedule, detailed work, freq interruptions, decision making skills, work independently, multitask, freq deadlines, organizational skills, work w/others. 


Qualifications

Education: High school diploma/GED and completion of a formal phlebotomy education program with didactic and clinical components; Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy School/Course (an original transcript or certification of completion must be provided at the time of the interview); or high school diploma/GED and completion of one year of full time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience; or enrollment in second year of MLT or MLS program. Certification: eligibility for American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Certification Agency (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT). Initial or proof of existing certification and receipt of ASCP, ACA, AMT, phlebotomy certification within 15 months of hire. Certification must be maintained at the expense of the employee and is required for continued employment. Experience: successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting Preferred experience: · Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity · Prior direct contact with patients in a health care setting · exposure to/or experience with computerized order/data entry systems · prior work experience in an environment requiring critical thinking skills · demonstrate effective team work ethic in prior positions
