As you know, Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) is a nonprofit organization based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, that operates four broadcast television channels, produces programs for regional and national television broadcast, operates numerous web sites, and produces rich media content for web distribution. Twin Cities Public Television is routinely among the top five most viewed public television stations in the United States.

What you may not know is that tpt is an organization that is in the process of transforming itself to seize the opportunities presented by the rapid change in the media world.  From the earliest days of television, forward thinkers realized that the power of this new mass medium would alter our society for both good and ill.  Realizing that the primary impetus for the development of the medium would be commercial gain, the U.S. government set aside a portion of the television spectrum to be used not for profit, but for the public good.  It is on this foundation that public television (and later public radio) was built.

Television remains a singularly powerful mass medium.  Americans of all ages are actually watching more hours of television than at any time in history.  However, over the past 16 years, the internet has given rise to a whole new world of media options.  Once again, it is clear that this powerful medium will alter our society for both good and ill.  It is also clear that the impetus for the development of this new medium is commercial gain.  And, once again, forward thinkers are looking for ways to ensure that this medium is used not only for profit, but also for the public good.

Within the past few years, it has become apparent that this "new media" is seriously disrupting the business models of "old media" organizations (such as newspapers, magazines, radio, and television). For these organizations, including tpt, failing to adapt to this new environment is not an option. 

TPT is seeking a Chief Financial Officer/Senior Vice President of Finance & Building Administration to become a part of the strategic executive team that will lead and help build a more flexible and future-oriented organization. 

Position Overview

The overall goal of this position is to lead tpt’s financial management and reporting, building administration and process design and management to support the planning and execution of strategic initiatives across the organization.  To fund the future, our institutional resources must operate more efficiently than ever before.  We are seeking a leader with the financial acumen as well as experience in process improvement, resource and business development experience to lead tpt’s financial division. 

The ideal leader will have broadcast industry knowledge and experience to be effective in short and long term organizational strategy, business development and “start-up” processes and initiatives experience, and the ability and working knowledge to lead facilities projects that ensure quality resources are available for staff, vendors and project partners.

The three (3) areas in this division he/she will lead are:

FINANCE

To oversee the financial functions of the organization and control and account for the revenue and expenses, including the supervision of investments, accounting and budgeting and payroll in accordance with applicable regulations and generally accepted accounting principles for a non-profit entity.  The new leader will act as the Liaison to Finance Committee to the Board of Trustees and work closely with the committee chair and President & CEO of tpt on matters pertaining to the Finance Committee.

PRODUCTION AND PROJECT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

To oversee the project financial management function including systems, project budgets, financial processes, compliance, and compliance resources, and staffing plans to support organizational needs.

BUILDING SERVICES

To provide business leadership in the Building Services Department to operate and maintain the facility and provide a safe environment for both people and equipment.

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader and manager of people and who can articulate a clear vision and inspire a group of talented and experienced managers to drive exceptional results.  He/She will be a change agent and motivational leader that challenges the status quo and develops management and staff within the organization to create new efficiencies. 

Desired Skills and Abilities

The desired qualities and attributes that this new leader will possess to achieve maximum results are:

  • Advanced degree in Finance and or Business Administration or related disciplines.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible administration and financial management experience.  Broadcasting industry experience is highly desirable. 
  • 10+ years of business development strategy and implementation experience.  Experience working with core business “start-up” business functions is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated leadership and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership experience. Successful experience in, forecasting, operating and capital budget procedures. Excellent analytical skills with effective business acumen is expected.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of technologies, particularly current and emerging technologies.
  • Tenured executive with a strong performance-based track record of success in financial and business management.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, learn new areas quickly, take ownership of issues/projects, develop recommendations, align with team and execute on proposal.
  • Track record in successfully creating and implementing processes and improvement strategies.

He/she will have strong influencing skills and the ability to interface effectively with multiple levels of management, ranging from senior corporate executives to other strategic partner companies, demonstrating good business judgment.
