Health Unit Coordinator

Facilitates the flow of information in the patient care area. Interacts on a person to person basis with doctors, nurses, patients, visitors and other departments for the purpose of answering questions and carrying out instructions.

Acts as a receptionist for the patient care area. Answers telephone, relays messages, greets and assists visitors, transcribes orders under supervision of RN. Schedules diagnostic tests, clinical appointments, and consultations. Works with charge nurse to coordinate the scheduling of tests, lab work and other department procedures. Maintains informational sources such as brain board, daily census, diet sheets, vital signs and weight board test results, and blood board. Assembles and assists with the maintenance of charts by recording information and adding and deleting pages as required. Maintains cleanliness and order within the nursing station office areas. Orders supplies.  

Previous Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or Nursing Station Technician experience or completed technical, college or internal Fairview HUC program, or equivalent and related experience. Knowledge or medical terminology, abbreviations, and hospital procedures is required. Communication skills such as clear speech, ability to read, legible handwriting, and basic computer skills are required.


    High School Diploma / G.E.D. required

    Vocational/Technical Training or Associate Degree required

    1 year college or 1 year related clerical experience (ordering supplies, receptionist, transcribing, scheduling) or 1 year of relevant medical experience
