The College of St. Scholastica invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Languages and International Studies (LIS). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a spectrum of undergraduate language, literature, and culture courses in both German and Russian, assume academic advising duties, participate in faculty governance, and assist with the current exchange programs.

The Department of Languages and International Studies offers courses in Spanish, French, German, Russian, Ojibwe, Latin, and American Sign Language. In addition to minors in French, German, Spanish, and Russian, the Department currently offers majors in both International Studies and Spanish. It has a long-standing and successful exchange program with the Karelian State Pedagogical University in Petrozavodsk, Duluth's sister city in Russia, as well as a short term exchange program with Leipzig, Germany. Philosophically, the Department embraces the study of languages and culture as a way to promote peace, justice, and understanding in a diverse world.

The College of St. Scholastica is a comprehensive, coeducational, Benedictine college with programs in the liberal arts and sciences and in professional career fields. The College enrolls 3,746 students: 2,341 traditional undergraduates and 1,405 non-traditional students. The main campus is located in Duluth, Minnesota on the scenic north shore of Lake Superior with branch campuses in St. Paul, Brainerd, Rochester and St. Cloud, Minnesota. A Ph.D. in German or Russian, or a closely related field is required. All Ph.D. requirements must be completed before employment commences in August 2010. Native or near-native fluency in German or Russian required, with advanced proficiency in the other language. The successful candidate will have teaching experience at the collegiate level and he or she should have a record of scholarly achievement/publications or clear potential for active scholarship. Ability to teach area studies or international studies in English will also be an advantage.
