Position Summary Information Position Responsibilities

We seek creative, collaborative faculty dedicated to excellent teaching in the field of American Sign Language (ASL). The School of Humanities, Arts and Sciences invites applicants for a full-time, one year temporary position with the American Sign Language & Interpreting Department beginning in Fall 2016, pending budget approval. Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience.

The ASL & Interpreting department of St. Catherine University (St. Kate's) is proud of its 33 year history of contributions and continued commitment to ASL and interpreter education. The department includes four full-time and ten adjunct faculty, lab assistants and a Program Coordinator/Interpreter. St. Catherine University has been awarded funding from the U. S. Department of Education (RSA) since 1999 to serve as a regional center for interpreter education and is currently one of five regional programs to be part of the NCIEC (National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers). St. Kate's has a national reputation and is known for its innovative programming as well as its faculty research and scholarly work in ethics and decision making, Deaf Interpreting, and enhanced ASL and interpreting teaching practices. St. Catherine University hosted the first Deaf Interpreter Conference during the summer of 2015, bringing over 200 Deaf interpreters from around the country to campus. St. Kate's values and enjoys partnerships with vibrant Deaf and interpreting communities, where activism and community involvement is highly valued. Minnesota is recognized as a frequent contributor, through involvement and leadership, to national and local organizations such as the National Association of the Deaf, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the American Sign Language Teachers Association, the Conference of Interpreter Trainers, and many more. We are the proud recipient of the 2015 Sorenson VRS Excellence and Innovation in Interpreter Education Award.

Responsibilities: Teach six undergraduate courses in the department, including ASL courses and ASL-English translation; hold regular office hours; curriculum revision for courses taught; and department service, including active participation in regular faculty meetings and working collaboratively on department committees. Responsibilities may also include advising ASL majors and/or conducting ASL placement interviews.

Position Qualifications

Qualifications:

Required: MA, college level ASL teaching experience.

Preferred: CDI or CDI coursework; ASLTA certification; experience teaching advanced ASL courses; experience or coursework in teaching translation and/or Deaf Culture; experience in assessment, distance learning, and teaching experience with adult learners.
