Dowling Catholic High School is in a search for the next President who will begin the job in July 2017. The school seeks a dynamic, inspirational, and visionary leader who is a practicing Catholic and committed to the mission and core values of Dowling Catholic High School.
The primary purpose of the President is to provide both spiritual and educational leadership for the school’s achievement of its mission as a Catholic school. By communicating the mission and vision of the school clearly and enthusiastically, by delegating responsibility and authority appropriately to others and calling them to accountability, and by prudent strategic planning and decision making, the President works to lead all members of the school community to do their best.
Dowling Catholic High School dates back to 1896 and is a diocesan-sponsored coed high school of 1,420 students located on a 60-acre campus in West Des Moines, Iowa. Dowling Catholic recently completed the We Believe capital campaign which included $31,000,000 to remodel and add classrooms. All classrooms are equipped with Smart boards and laptop computers or Chrome books. A new science wing has state of the art lab and classroom space, a new performing arts wing provides ample room for large or small groups, a new weight room includes more than 3,000 square feet of work out space, and a new 350 seat chapel provides seating space for class Mass. The campus includes a varsity baseball field, varsity softball field, stadium with a newly lighted 8-lane track, and turf field for varsity soccer and lower leave football, 6 tennis courts, 2 gyms, and a 6-lane 25 meter swimming pool.
Students come from 45 zip codes in the Des Moines metro area and represent a wide variety of racial and socioeconomic backgrounds with 40% receiving financial aid. Over 98% of students go on to further education after graduation. The school includes 22% minority enrollment including 28 international students.
Faith formation and Christian service are integrated into the classroom and activities of the school. High expectations and a sense of community permeate the atmosphere at Dowling Catholic in and out of the classroom. The student body contributes more than 25,000 hours of community service and has a variety of retreats, Masses, and campus ministry activities available at all grade levels.
Dowling Catholic High School provides a strong college prep curriculum with an emphasis on STEM education, including a four year engineering program. Students score consistently high on the Iowa Assessments, AP tests, ACT, and SAT. The fine arts program includes multiple choirs, bands, and drama opportunities.
Students participate in more than 40 clubs and organizations as well as 19 athletic sports for boys and girls. Extensive programs in vocal music, band, drama, and forensics provide a variety of opportunities for students. The school has won the Iowa All Sports Award twice and has a large number of students who achieve all state status in vocal music, band, and debate. The school received an Innovation in Education award from Catholic Teacher magazine in 2016.
