The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Digital Metadata Librarian.

This position is situated within the Collection Management & Services department of St. Thomas Libraries and reports to the Associate Director for Collection Management & Services. As part of a team of cataloging and metadata staff, and e-resources staff, the Digital Metadata Librarian creates, reviews, and advises others on metadata for objects in digital format.  Creates metadata for purchased electronic resources, digital archival materials, and UST publications in a variety of systems, such as Alma, ContentDM, and Digital Commons (UST Research Online).

As part of a team, ensures accurate access to library research collection electronic resources via the ProQuest Knowledge Base and Primo Central Index.  Performs quality-control for metadata created by other library staff or University staff in library systems such as Alma, ContentDM, and Digital Commons.  Performs copy, upgrade, and original cataloging primarily for digital materials, but also for materials in all formats, including multimedia and print. Creates and maintains metadata standards for a variety of schema in library systems, such as Alma, ContentDM, and Digital Commons

This position will work primarily Monday through Friday during business hours (8-6)

  1. Metadata Creation and Management
  • Perform copy, upgrade, and original cataloging primarily for materials in digital formats, but including all formats, including media and print; as well as all material types, including documents, databases, manuscripts, theses/dissertations, books, and serials.
  • Supports discovery of and access to the library’s electronic and digital content through metadata creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance
  • With the Head of Special Collections, ensure that university records are well- described, archived, and preserved.
  • Follows all local and national cataloging and metadata standards and keeps current with all updates and revisions to these standards
  • Actively participates in creating or modifying NACO authority records for personal and corporate names and series.
  • When necessary, assist with managing and uploading university documents to ContentDM, Digital Commons, and other library systems while ensuring full and accurate metadata for those objects.
  • Ensure access to objects in ContentDM and Digital Commons are available via the library’s discovery system, Primo.
  1. Access to Library E-Resources
  • Assists with the maintenance of accurate Knowledge Base holdings in Alma, as well as the accuracy of the Primo Central Index.
  • Loads sets of MARC records as needed into Alma to ensure user access to library electronic resources. Where possible, enriches Knowledge Base metadata for library-held resources in Alma
  1. Professional Development
  • Attends conferences, participates in webinars, and/or takes advantage of other opportunities to maintain current knowledge in relevant library fields, such as cataloging, metadata, e-resources, digital repositories, and special collections & archives.
  1. Other Duties
  • Assists with other duties as assigned, particularly within the department. This might include placing orders, labeling and barcoding print books, running reports, assisting with upload of documents to Digital Commons, or troubleshooting e-resources.
  • Attend and participate in department and library-wide meetings.
  • Contribute to department policy and procedure decisions

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science and three years of library experience to include cataloging and metadata experience as well as experience with automated library systems. 

Preferred qualifications: Experience using Alma and Primo; experience with digital asset management systems; ContentDM and Digital Commons; and familiarity with acquisitions and electronic resources.

Knowledge of:  cataloging rules, metadata schemas, standards, tools, and their application, such as AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCC, MARC21, OCLC, MODS, VRA Core, Dublin Core, DCRMs, DLF MODS Guidelines, and DACS.  Commitment to metadata as a user service, with a focus on user access to library-managed resource. Aptitude with library and office technologies. 

  

Skills: Excellent verbal communication skills and an interest in working across library and university departments is required

  

Abilities:  Ability to work in a team-based environment, with colleagues inside and outside the library.  Ability to identify and cultivate opportunities to collaborate with colleagues to provide high-quality metadata for projects within and outside the library.
