The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Cook position within Dining Services.
The cook prepares menu items using the broiler, fryer, pizza oven and microwave. Able to work all stations. Assist making grill and pizza items to order. Preps for lunch, dinner and special events. This position works closely with students and is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
1. Short order cooking at every station. Knowledge of all menu items and recipes. Preparing menu items to order, maintaining quality food items and minimizing food waste. Assist with pizza preparation and pizza cooking as necessary that will keep up with the increasing demands of business expectations.
a) Retrieves food products and supplies
b) Maintains food ingredients for all stations (pizza, grill, sandwich)
2. Cashiering duties during non-food preparation periods. (Cross training)
a) Cash handling according to UST cash handling guidelines
3. Assist with training student employees in various jobs; cook, pizza, dish area.
4. Maintains a clean working environment; following the Health Department regulations and guidelines.
5. Participating in the regular cleaning schedule for equipment (fryer, broiler, ventilation hood)

Minimum qualifications: High School diploma or the equivalent and two years of experience in a large-scale institutional food preparation and high-volume cooking environment. Prior short order cooking, pizza and cashiering preferred.
Job may require working more than assigned work schedule.
Knowledge of: Principles, methods and equipment used in high volume meal preparation in an institutional setting; safe work practices and sanitation related to food preparation and service; trained in proper food handling procedures; business arithmetic; basic inventory and record keeping principles and practices; MDH regulations.
Skill in: Restaurant setting; overseeing and prioritizing the work of others; organization, making ad-hoc decisions; self-starter who is able to work in a fast paced environment; operating, cleaning and performing minor maintenance to large institutional food preparation and cooking equipment; directing others in work procedures; making accurate arithmetic calculations; reading, understanding and following recipes and oral and written directions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; maintaining security of facilities and equipment; contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities; excellent customer service skills.
