Status:  Full-Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Starting Salary: Starts at $23.94 to $28.52 per hour, depending on qualifications

Location: Maintenance Facility

Hours:  Standard business hours (7:00 AM –3:30 PM); varies based on the business need and time of year

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Street Division Manager

Public Works Department
The Public Works Department is comprised of Engineering, the Water Treatment Plant, Utility Field Operations, Street Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Environmental Services. The department is responsible for the environmental management, design, construction, and maintenance of the street, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the community. 

Position Details
The Street Maintenance Operator uses hand tools, power equipment and mechanized equipment to perform a wide variety of maintenance activities within the public right of way including patching, mowing, snow plowing, concrete repair, and street sweeping. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

1)    Uses strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of maintenance activities using hand, power and heavy equipment including pickups, trucks, compressor/air tools, chainsaws, skid steer loader, and backhoe.
2)    Develops and applies specialized skills to the division needs in such areas as carpentry, welding, advanced repairs; provides training in specialized skill to co-workers and seasonal staff; looks for opportunities to develop and use technical knowledge to support the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
3)    Demonstrates safe equipment operation and working conditions in traffic on City streets and entering confined spaces.
4)    Reads maps, performs division record keeping and utilizes computer technology to assist in these activities.
5)    Performs daily preventative maintenance and pre-trip DOT inspections.
6)    Actively participates in educational requirements to maintain appropriate licensing or certificates.
7)    Maintains an excellent driving record and a Commercial Driver’s License (if posses).

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Physical Requirements:
Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required.  Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. 

Working Conditions:
Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles.  Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold.  Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery or dusty and windy conditions. At these times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions.  Some assignments involve exposure to odors, such as from hot asphalt or fleet chemicals. There is often exposure to traffic and moving equipment.  There is considerable attention to detail when handling equipment in tight quarters or around people.

Position Requirements

Education: Associate’s degree or two-year technical degree not required, but preferred; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class B) with air brakes and tanker endorsement is required on start date; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class A) with air brakes and tanker endorsement is required within 6-months of employment.

Work Experience: Minimum of two to four years of related experience preferred; other trade experience preferred in concrete, road construction, landscaping, welding, electrical, etc.

Pre-Employment Process
The City of Eden Prairie conducts professional reference and criminal history checks for all employees joining the organization. In addition, the following is required for this specific position: driver’s check (must have valid driver’s license and excellent driving record); CDL process; pre-employment physical; drug and alcohol test. All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the pre-employment process before their first day of employment.
