Minnesota AIDS Project (www.mnaidsproject.org) seeks a FT health educator to be part of a peer-based, mission-driven team dedicated to stopping HIV and enhancing the well-being of those affected by HIV. Specific responsibilities include: HIV counseling, testing and referral; linking individuals with HIV to medical care and support services; peer education and community outreach. The target population for this program is young (18-29) African American or multiracial gay/bisexual/queer men and other men who have sex with men. The health educator will be an articulate spokesperson, effective mentor and trainer, and competent peer and team member. An ability to gain the trust and confidence of individuals within the target population is essential to success in this position and those with lived experiences within the target populations are strongly encouraged to apply.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Deliver HIV counseling, testing and referral to individuals from targeted communities.
  • Assist individuals living with HIV in linking to medical care, medication adherence services, and other resources as needed.
  • Provide risk reduction and public health education, social networking and marketing using innovative techniques designed to reach the targeted communities.
  • Assist with development and delivery of a community advisory board.
  • Assist with condom distribution.
  • Conduct recruitment activities to reach target population, or those who work with this population, in a variety of settings including public spaces, bars, treatment centers, community agencies and special events.
  • Conduct outreach to targeted communities in electronic settings including chat rooms and mobile social networking applications.
  • Maintain thorough understanding of HIV disease, transmission and services and thorough understanding of the intersection of chemical and mental health concerns and health management
  • Coordinate efforts of volunteers in office and outreach sessions.
  • Collaborate with agency and community HIV professionals and stakeholders.
  • Track and report program data.

Desired Qualifications:

 

  • Demonstrated skill and expertise working with African American and multi-racial communities who are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Those with lived experiences in these communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated comfort and skill in addressing Gay/Bi/MSM/Queer and Transgender health issues. Individuals from these communities are encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with HIV-positive people, and those engaged in risk behaviors for HIV in individual and group settings. Individuals from this target population encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge and comfort working with topics including: HIV health, chemical health, mental health and sexual health and conducting this work from a client-centered, harm-reduction perspective.
  • High school diploma or GED required. Post high-school coursework in public health, social work, human services or other related area or equivalent professional experience is preferred.
  • Comfort delivering HIV testing involving finger pokes and collection of a small amount of blood. Training will be provided.
  • Knowledge and comfort working with topics including: HIV health, HIV prevention and care education strategies, chemical health and mental health.
  • Comfort and skill being a peer leader, spokesperson and mentor with community members.
  • Comfort and willingness to uphold and support clear boundaries with program participants and in peer-based settings.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, problem solving and organizational skills.
