Summary        This position is responsible for performing editing, copyediting, and proofreading for Editorial Services. Editors work individually or as part of a team composed of the Manager, senior editors, editors, and/or temporary and freelance editors. They work with internal clients and senior editors to plan, organize, and implement work based on establish priorities for all phases of the editorial production of electronic or printed documents, test materials, and communication materials submitted to Editorial Services. They oversee and complete editing assignments based on schedules, ensuring that deadlines are met and submitted materials are accurately edited at the editing level requested. They follow the appropriate editorial production process for all assigned materials. They edit, copyedit and revise submitted materials and if requested, check to see whether all submitted materials meet identified style specifications. They advise internal clients on ways to improve the quality of materials edited. They work with internal clients to define product and/or test/item specifications, including design, layout, and format specifications and assist internal clients in making decisions related to proposed edits.


Position Responsibilities

  • Plans work according to established priorities and project schedules
  • Provides routine feedback to team members regarding the implementation and task timelines of assigned items and/or projects
  • Implements editorial schedules and monitors the status of schedules
  • Coordinates all steps in the editorial process for assigned projects
  • Edits, copyedits, and corrects manuscripts, including typeset documents and printer’s proofs; checks for match to document and style specifications consistent with requested level of editing
  • Maintains records for all editing phases of assigned projects, including level of editing, complexity of materials, style requirements, etc., through all phases of the editing process
  • Establishes a high-level working knowledge of The Chicago Manual Style (CMS) and and its application to the variety of materials submitted to Editorial Services
  • Assists with external client communications
  • Follows the requirements of the Standards for Psychological and Educational Testing, as required for editorial processes
  • Some travel required

Qualifications: Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English language arts or journalism with commensurate work-related experience and skills considered, provided the candidate has a proven record of outstanding work
  • Three to five years of editing or copyediting experience and/or test development experience in a business setting
  • Exceptional knowledge of grammar and grammar rules
  • Knowledge and experience in editing a wide range of materials of varying complexities in a business or academic setting
  • Superior communication skills
  • Working knowledge of CMS 15ed or 16ed, and/or other manuals of style
  • Experience meeting production deadlines in a team environment
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, the Internet, and e-mail systems


  • Advanced degree in English language arts
  • Teaching experience, curriculum development experience, or specialized skills in mathematics or science
  • Working knowledge of basic database file manipulation
