The Department of Mathematics at the University of St. Thomas invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in Actuarial Science, to begin in September 2018.   

The University of St. Thomas is a liberal arts institution that values excellence in teaching and research.  The 20-member Department of Mathematics ( offers bachelor's programs in mathematics, mathematics education, and actuarial science, and supports the interdepartmental degree program in statistics and is quite active in the area of undergraduate research.   The Actuarial Science Program ( offers a Bachelor of Science degree and is located in the Department of Mathematics.  The Actuarial Science Program is recognized as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries.  The Center for Applied Mathematics ( is located within the department and supports faculty and student research on a variety of projects.

The prime teaching responsibility for the successful candidate is undergraduate actuarial science courses.  To complete the normal load, the candidate can expect to teach lower level mathematics courses or possibly statistics courses.  The standard teaching load for this position is three courses per semester; however, candidates who exhibit (or demonstrate strong potential for) an established research agenda in actuarial science might be eligible for release time in support of their scholarly work.  


It is preferred that applicants have a Ph.D. in actuarial science or in a closely related field with emphasis in financial mathematics or statistics. ABDs nearing completion of the Ph.D. are considered with the initial appointment to be made at the rank of instructor.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and show strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities in actuarial science or a closely related field.   Preference will be given to applicants who possess (or are near completion of) actuarial credentials from any of the professional societies.  

We prefer candidates whose research agendas focus on areas that will contribute to maintaining our status as a Center of Actuarial Excellence.
