The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Writer/Editor II position within the Marketing, Insights and Communications Department.

Captivate readers as a writer and primary storyteller for the University of St. Thomas. As part of the Marketing, Insights and Communications News Team, you will inform, inspire and promote the university’s mission through storytelling that instills pride, celebrates excellence and builds community. 

As a writer/editor you will be responsible for a wide range of stories for print and online publications. Story assignments include but are not limited to long-form features, short-form online stories, profiles and news items:

  • Two long-form features for each issue of St. Thomas magazine and a profile for each issue of other academic magazines.
  • Shorter stories on a daily basis for publication in the Newsroom; perhaps as many as 120 stories annually.
  • Editing and proofreading content (editorial and promotional) for the print and digital publications.
  • A working knowledge of communications strategies, including use of website content management (both inside and outside of the Newsroom), social media, email and RSS.
  • Ability to work with photography and videography staffs to coordinate multimedia projects to support feature stories.

Minimum qualifications: a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field, and three years of professional writing experience to include print and online publications. Mastery of Associated Press Stylebook is a must.

Knowledge of:  Principles, practices, materials and techniques of public information and education; interviewing; creative writing; computer applications related to the work; knowledge of print and digital media and appropriate software. Knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook. Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and record keeping principles and practices; correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; techniques for dealing with staff, vendors and others, in person and over the telephone; principles and techniques of preparing effective written informational or educational materials.

Skill in: producing effective written materials for a variety of informational and educational uses; maintaining accurate records of work performed;  organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines; using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Strong writing and editing skills. Oral communication skills to interview people and handle departmental inquiries. Organizational skills to prioritize and meet tight deadlines. Sound news judgment and instincts. Ability to work under deadline pressure on a regular basis, and to juggle multiple projects at the same time.
