The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Child Development Teacher position within the Child Development Center.

The child development teacher is responsible for all aspects of the daily classroom operation including designing and maintaining the classroom environment, planning and executing the weekly curriculum plan, tracking the developmental progress of individual children, supervision of some student workers and volunteers and parent communication. The child development teacher also has a leadership role in the Center and in the Division of Student Affairs.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:  Must have completed a sufficient number of accredited courses to be qualified as a teacher according to the State of MN, Department of Human Services.  A Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience working full time with children in a classroom setting, of which one (1) year involved supervising the work of other adults.

Knowledge of:  Principles and practices for providing developmentally focused early childhood education; training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation at hand; human behavior and development from birth through 8 years of age; assessment of typical child development and behavioral and affective disorders; computer applications related to the work; business arithmetic; record keeping principles and practices; correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic crisis intervention and counseling techniques; basic laws, codes and regulations related to the work.

Skill in:  Building relationships and interacting effectively with children and adults; teaching concepts to different age groups; reconciling differences and resolving conflicts; working with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds;supervising the work of other adults; preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials; understanding and following oral and written directions; contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; speaking English effectively to communicate in person or over the telephone; using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.

Physical requirements:  Must be able to physically play with and supervise children including:  bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, running, squatting and sitting on the floor or ground.  Must be able to visually observe children in their environment. The ability to lift, carry, and transport children and equipment weighing up to thirty pounds. The ability to read printed materials and a computer screen. The ability to communicate in person and over the telephone.
