The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a part-time Organist/Pianist position within the Center for Ministry.
The part-time Organist/Pianist (OP) at the University of Saint Thomas works collaboratively to support and enhance the liturgies of the campus community at the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas. The professional musician must be faith-filled, willing to serve God and others with an understanding of ministry, its needs and pastoral needs in an academic setting. The OP should be flexible, punctual, organized, and have the ability to work both independently and with students, professional staff and volunteer ministers.
The part-time OP position requires an average of 10 hours a week during the academic year and reduced hours in January and during the summer. The OP is supervised by and reports to the Assistant Director for Liturgy and Music.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Primary OP for the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass
- Primary OP for the 12:10 PM weekday Mass (Monday-Friday)
- Primary accompanist for the Liturgical Choir
- Rehearsing with cantors before Mass
- Assist for major solemnities and festivities within the liturgical calendar
The OP accompanies the weekday 12:10 PM Mass and the Sunday 11:00 AM Mass. The OP cooperates with the Assistant Director for Liturgy and Music playing for some solemnities and festivities within the liturgical calendar (including Christmas, Triduum and Easter).
The Liturgical Choir (LC) is a university choir and it is directed by a professional conductor. The LC meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon 1:30-3:10 PM in the St. Thomas Chapel during the Fall Semester (September-December) and during the Spring Semester (February- May). The LC serves at the 11:00 AM Mass twice a month when in session during the academic year. The LC also performs two concerts (Christmas and Spring) and plans two yearly retreats.
A formal musical training and degree in music is required. Ability to play both organ and piano. An understanding of the Catholic Mass and Catholic functions. At least 5 years of experience as a liturgical accompanist in a parish setting. Experience working with volunteers and professional singers and instrumentalists. Must be flexible, punctual, organized, and have the ability to work both independently and with students, the professional staff and volunteer ministers.
