The Occupational Therapist evaluates patients and plans and implements an effective occupational therapy program based upon physical assessment, sound judgement and psychological sensitivity. Maintains a high level of professional expertise and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Reviews physicians referral, patient's condition and patient medical records to aid in determining an occupational therapy treatment plan.
Tests and measures patient's function to include but is not limited to: strength, motion, motor development, sensory perception, coordination, sensation, and cognition, and records findings to develop or revise treatment plans/programs.
Establishes a written plan of care which includes patient and family involvement in determining realistic, specific, functional and measurable goals.
Confers with Physician and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest revisions in treatment program, and integrate occupational therapy treatment with other aspects of patient's health care.
Performs and integrates examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention to maximize patient outcomes.
Administers interventions to include:
Functional retraining in self cares, ADLs, home management, community and work.
Manual therapy techniques.
Prescribes, applies, adjusts and as appropriate, fabricates devices and equipment.
Electrotherapeutic modalities, physical agents (if PAMS certified).
Provides adaptive equipment education/instruction and resources.
Instructs, motivates and assists patient and family members in treatment plan and home program and provides written direction when necessary.
Demonstrates the ability to instruct, supervise and delegate appropriate patient care activities/treatment to support personnel as needed.
Records treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart or enters information into computer, according to department guidelines.
Establishes an early discharge plan involving patient, family and other appropriate services which may include written instructions and recommendations.
Recognizes when patient's treatment plan requires modification, discontinuation or patient referral based on goals established and rehab potential.
Performs reassessments and discharges in a timely manner.
Seeks out continuing education opportunities that ensure professional growth.
Participates in meetings and in-services.
Assists with clinical education, instruction and supervision of OT and OT assistant students as delegated by Department Manager.
Participates in QA activities to ensure improved quality of patient care.
Treats within scope of practice, abides by State Practice Act guidelines, and follows ethical/legal standards of practice per AOTA guidelines.
Provides occupational therapy in the home setting.
Provides ergonomic assessments within the hospital and throughout the community as designated by the department manager.
Responsible for maintaining and creating up-to-date OT policy and procedures.
Assists department manager in efficient operation of the department.
Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of JCAHO as required for full accreditation. Supports JCAHO objectives.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from accredited school of occupational therapy.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current MN license. CPR certification.
