Assistant Entomologist

SALARY: $24.00-$33.17 Hourly

DESCRIPTION:

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, a multi-county public agency, currently intends to fill a regular, full-time professional/technical level position of Assistant Entomologist. This position is responsible for identifying adult and larval mosquitoes, conducting mosquito and black fly surveillance, prompt reporting of accurate surveillance results to the organization to guide control efforts, and coordinating experimental design development and statistical analysis of results. The position reports to the Entomologist. 
 
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform identification of larval and adult mosquitoes, larval black flies, and other aquatic invertebrates.
Prepare technical reports and protocols.
Coordinate, set up and maintain Monday Night surveillance Network.
Evaluate and test potential new surveillance techniques & procedures.
Assist in training Technical Services seasonal inspectors in larval and adult mosquito identification and monitor the quality of their work.
Coordinate experimental designs and statistically analyze results such as: control material efficacy tests, non-target impact of control methods, ecology of mosquitoes and black flies, epidemiological analyses, evaluating new control methods.
Statistically analyze data, assist coworkers with statistical analyses and modeling.
Perform Tick identifications as needed.
Develop presentations for internal and external professional groups. Review relevant literature to ensure current knowledge in mosquito management.
Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Entomology (taxonomy) or related Biological sciences field; or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

  KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
. Use of dichotomous keys
. Mosquito/Black Fly and aquatic insect (for non-target) biology & taxonomy
. Knowledge of statistical analysis and experimental design
. Insect surveillance & equipment knowledge
. Tick surveillance and identification
. Microscope use
. Design of laboratory QA procedures

SKILLS REQUIRED:
. Reading, written communications and understanding maps/plans
. Using a computer and applicable software applications
. Using standard office equipment, i.e. copiers, fax machine, etc.
. Maintaining records and preparing reports
. Prioritizing and completing work projects
. Communicating, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
. Assist in training others in laboratory work

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: fingering, grasping, reaching, standing walking, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
 
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to manipulate, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Incumbents may be subjected to visiting out door field sites and operating a motor vehicle at times.
