The VA Midwest Healthcare Network (VISN 23), is looking for a VISN 23 Medical Director for the Extended Care and Rehabilitation (EC&R) Service Line. The position is located in our VISN Office in Eagan, MN.
** Virtual MAY be considered for a highly qualified candidate at one of the VISN 23 Facilities; First Area of Consideration will be those applicants willing to relocate to or be located on-site at the Eagan, MN (Minneapolis/St. Paul) office ** There is only one vacancy.
This vacancy announcement establishes an "Open Continuous Announcement" for eligible applicants to be considered for Medical Director, Extended Care & Rehabilitation Service Line. This announcement will establish an inventory of applicants interested in a career as a Medical Director within the Veterans Health Administration.

Under the general direction of the VISN 23 Chief Medical Officer, the VISN 23 EC&R Medical Director provides leadership and direction to the Extended Care and Rehabilitation (EC&R) Service Line. The Service Line Medical Director provides consultation and guidance to each of the 8 VA Medical Facilities in the Midwest Region who have EC&R facility leaders to deliver care to Veterans. He/she must have outstanding clinical, and leadership skills and will work collaboratively with other VISN 23 EC&R Service Line staff to provide clinical, programmatic, and leadership direction and consultation to ensure reliable and high quality care. The VISN 23 EC&R Medical Director also serves as a consultant and regional representative to Central Office Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC), Rehabilitation, and Hospice and Palliative Care Program Offices in Washington D.C. to provide guidance and input on program development and policy as well as communicate national program office goals and initiatives to VISN 23 facilities. At the VISN level, serves as one of the Executive Leadership Council members along with other senior leaders and provides visionary leadership to support the foundational services of geriatric, extended care, rehabilitation, and hospice and palliative care to ensure high quality care and a standardized approach. This professional works with other senior leaders and staff to address clinical and administrative issues and potential barriers and proposes strategies for resolution. This leader can effectively communicate both programmatic successes and challenges and advocate for necessary resources as well as ensures the monitoring of quality improvement data and implementation of VISN and site-specific action plans for continuous performance improvement. This leader assesses, reviews, and monitors measurable outcomes established by VA Central Office and VISN 23 and serves to motivate, encourage growth, and stimulate program improvement by ensuring spread and sustainment of best practices and current knowledge among the 8 medical facilities. This leader may directly supervise VISN 23 EC&R Service Line staff.
Major responsibilities include:
- Provides visionary leadership at a regional level to support the foundational services of geriatric, extended care, rehabilitation, and hospice and palliative care to ensure high quality and a standardized approach for Veteran care.
- Ensures the monitoring of quality improvement data for all EC&R programs at VISN 23 facilities and the implementation of VISN and site-specific action plans for continuous performance improvement.
- Assesses, reviews, and monitors measurable outcomes established by VA Central Office or VISN 23 and serves to motivate, encourage growth, and stimulate program improvement by ensuring spread and sustainment of best practices and knowledge among the VISN 23 facilities.
- Skilled clinician and effective leader who is able to mentor and provide guidance for leaders within the 8 facilities.
- A successful change agent who can motivate others to improve and maximize their potential.
