Co-founded in 1915 by Helen Keller, Helen Keller International is dedicated to saving the sight and lives of the world’s vulnerable. We combat the causes and consequences of preventable blindness, malnutrition and diseases of poverty with more than 120 programs in 20 African and Asian countries, as well as in the United States. Renowned for its reliability, efficiency and high level of technical expertise, Helen Keller International promotes the development of large-scale, sustainable solutions to some of the most pressing issues in public health. We deliver scientific rigor and effectively leverage donor dollars with our hallmark characteristics of grit, compassion and integrity. If you share these characteristics, we invite you to apply to open positions at Helen Keller International.

Background

Recognizing a lack of accessible, adequate vision care among low-income children in the US, Helen Keller International (HKI) established ChildSight® in 1994.  The program identifies and treats refractive errors (i.e., nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) by providing in-school vision screenings, prescription eyeglasses, and ophthalmologic referrals to local partners for follow-up care as needed.  In so doing, the program “brings education into focus”™ for children who would otherwise be left with poor vision – and unfulfilled potential.  To date, ChildSight® has screened more than 1.9 million students in the US and has provided free eyeglasses to approximately 300,000 children living in some of our country’s poorest neighborhoods.

To address the needs of economically challenged children in the Minneapolis / St. Paul communities, HKI has newly established ChildSight® Minnesota.  The program will serve low-income elementary, middle, high school, and alternative learning students in the Twin Cities’ area.

Functional Relationships

Reporting to the Regional Manager, ChildSight® Midwest, the Program Manager will also work closely with the ChildSight® Program Finance Officer, as well as with the project’s donors and partners, and will supervise a team of seasonal Program Assistants.  The Program Manager will partner regularly with External Relations staff on communications and fundraising, and other Headquarters staff that provide support to the program in Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology and Operations on an as needed basis.

HKI has a matrixed reporting structure that respects both the line management and authority within field office and project hierarchies; and the accountability and oversight duties of subject matter experts at the headquarters level.  Regular communication and a spirit of team work among colleagues, both hierarchically and laterally are essential to make this structure thrive.

Scope of the Position

The Program Manager’s main responsibilities are programmatic and operational management, including staff management, the preparation of work plans, budgets, integration of new policies, procedures and initiatives, drafting donor reports, success stories, and day-to-day monitoring and evaluation of program implementation quality and overall progress against set objectives.    Working in collaboration with colleagues, the Program Manager also supports long-range planning and supports local fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus two to four years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in school and/or health settings, and with adolescents and knowledge of and sensitivity to the local context is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently, but also coordinate effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills; demonstrating diplomacy and tact.
  • Strong communications and writing skills, including public speaking.
  • Demonstrable respect for all persons regardless of religion, ethnicity, class or gender.
  • Willingness to travel within state and use of a personal vehicle with adequate insurance for HKI business.

Helen Keller International is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, disability, or protected veteran status.
