The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Centers (GRECCs) are United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) centers of excellence focused on aging. They were established by Congress in 1975 in order to improve the health and health care of older Veterans. They have three main missions: (1) to build new knowledge through research; (2) to improve health care through the development of new clinical programs; and (3) to ensure that "VA" staff are educated about aging-related issues.

Responsibilities

The Minneapolis VA Health Care System is seeking a physician leader to become the Director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). The GRECCs are located at 20 medical centers across the country, and each is connected with a major research university. The mission of the Minneapolis GRECC is to improve the care and health of older Veterans through integrated research, education and innovative clinical care. Current research interests include animal models of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, brain imaging in dementia, evidence-based reviews for diagnosing and managing dementia, clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease, neuropeptide control of eating, new models of health care delivery and novel strategies for teaching, assessment and management of dementia.

The GRECC Director will be responsible for the overall operations and management of the GRECC, providing strategic leadership to foster continued growth, and developing strong working relationships with leadership in the VA locally, regionally (VISN23), nationally and with the University of Minnesota.

The best qualified candidate will be a physician researcher who will qualify for an academic appointment at the University of Minnesota at the Associate or Full Professor Level and have leadership experience and a track record of mentoring junior faculty. Physician candidates who are board certified in geropsychiatry, neurology, or geriatrics are preferred.
