OVERVIEW

The College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a clinical faculty position to serve as Director of the Center for Irish Studies and as Editor of New Hibernia Review. The Director/Editor will work to advance the mission of the center:

The Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas advances teaching and scholarship in Irish Studies for students, faculty and friends of the university through publications, instruction and public programs; enriches the international dimensions of education at St. Thomas; and affirms the many historic and contemporary bonds between the university, Ireland and the Irish-American community.

We seek applicants from any discipline who have an established academic record in Irish Studies and have experience with editing and publishing. As a clinical faculty position, the Director/Editor will also teach two courses in Irish Studies at either the undergraduate or graduate level as appropriate.

Editorial Duties

Oversees all aspects of the production and distribution of New Hibernia Review, a multidisciplinary quarterly journal of Irish Studies. The journal is currently standardized at 160 pages. At present it appears in both hard copy and in on-line versions through the library subscription-based Project Muse and JSTOR services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Encouraging submissions to the journal
  • Overseeing the peer review process
  • Editorial correspondence throughout the process (including permissions, etc.)
  • Developmental and substantive copyediting of articles accepted into NHR
  • Coordinating and editing all book reviews that appear in NHR
  • Writing editorial notes and cover notes
  • Liaising with the editorial boards
  • Liaising with typesetters, printers, the postal service, Project Muse™ and JSTOR™, subscription services, as well as providers of cover art

In addition, the viability and credibility of the journal requires that the Center be involved in and visible at meetings of the American Conference for Irish Studies.

Director Duties

The Director oversees the operation of the center, including the development of web and social media communications to advance its agenda. The director maintains regular communication with donors and cultivates new prospects.

The Center administers the annual Lawrence O'Shaughnessy Award for Poetry, which is a cash prize presented to an Irish poet. The Center also organizes symposia on Irish topics, e.g., the Irish family, Irish death practices, and Irish environmentalism and also organizes guest lectures on Irish Studies topics. The Center often avails of opportunities for community partnerships with such groups as the Friends of the Library, the Guthrie Theater, and other area cultural organizations.

The Director/Editor is expected to help in the development of Study Abroad programs in Ireland through the College of Arts & Sciences.

Teaching

As clinical faculty, the Director/Editor will be able to teach classes in their home discipline as well as interdisciplinary courses, and will be able to propose curriculum and permanent courses. The Director/Editor will also liaise with various programs to encourage the development of Irish Studies courses.


QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate must have excellent ability to teach undergraduates and incorporate them into meaningful research. A PhD is preferred, though ABDs or MAs with considerable administrative and editorial experience will be considered.
