JOB SUMMARY

This position assists undergraduate students with course registration, major and minor field selection, understanding graduation requirements and degree planning, academic support for at-risk students, and referrals to campus resources. The Academic Counselor position also supports faculty advisors, manages attendance alerts sent by faculty members, and engages in various outreach efforts to students. This position will also provide leadership and support for data and technology related to academic advising.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide academic advising for undergraduate students via in-person, e-mail, and phone appointments and drop-in advising services.
    • Provide education and guidance in regard to the core curriculum, including interpreting and editing degree evaluations
    • Assist students in course selection, course sequencing, four-year graduation plans
    • Provide support for a caseload of at-risk students, including provisionally admitted students and students on academic probation. Content of support may vary by student and often includes consultation about time management, test-taking strategies, study skills, etc.
    • Collaborate on the development and implementation of a curricular approach to the work of academic advising, which focuses on learning outcomes, lesson plan development, and assessment of learning outcomes.
    • Remain current on the scholarship of academic advising and student development
  • Departmental Leadership related to Data and Technology
    • Work collaboratively with Salesforce developers to update and further develop departmental initiatives which utilize tools in Salesforce (e.g. early alert system, reports, analysis of data, etc.)
    • Collaboration with administrative assistant for website content and development
    • Represent the department's technology needs and interests to other departments
    • Collaborate with Center for Student Achievement partners about technology needs and initiatives
    • Provide training and support to academic counseling colleagues regarding new and updated advising technology (i.e. Degreeworks; Salesforce; Banner 9; etc.)
  • Facilitate course registration for all first year students, as well as transfer, and former-returning students.
    • Advising and provide assistance for first-year students for the first semester schedule of classes.
    • Facilitate advising and registration activities for incoming first-year students during the Orientation & Registration program.
    • Conduct individual registration appointments with newly admitted transfer students.
    • Assist transfer students with issues related to transfer credit, course petitions, and degree requirements.
  • Provide resources and support for instructors and faculty advisors (pre-major and major field advisors).
    • Attendance Alerts: Assess alerts issued by faculty and engage in efforts to assist faculty in locating students reported missing from class and provide follow up support for these students.
    • Assist faculty advisors in degree evaluation interpretation, editing degree evaluation based on exceptions and waivers, etc.
    • Proactively engage in retention efforts with individual students and those coordinated by the Center for Student Achievement
  • Additional projects/collateral duties. Examples include:
    • Representation on campus committees
    • As part of the Center for Student Achievement (CSA), this position will collaborate with CSA partners to help students explore options and opportunities, provide academic support, and enrich their academic experiences.
    • Programs, services and outreach for specific populations (working with students who appeal their academic suspension/dismissal, student athletes, international students, pre-health students, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, education or college student personnel and two years of advising and counseling experience in higher education or an equivalent setting or a Master's degree in counseling, education or college student personnel.
  • Experience working with students from various backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of computer applications related to the work (Banner, Optix, online course registration systems, etc.)
