Geographic Information Systems Technician (PT)- Position Profile

  • Status:  Part-time position, non-exempt
  • Salary:  Starts at $23.90 - $27.25 per hour (Depending upon qualifications)

Location: City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie, MN 55344

Hours:  Typically 15-25 hours per week within the week (Monday through Friday); Flexible schedule in between the business hours of 7:00am-4:30pm

Information Technology Division

The Information Technology (IT) Division delivers information services, information technology and telecommunication services to City staff to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of City services. This division is responsible for the operations and support of the City's servers, business applications and network infrastructure that provides connectivity for 15 remote locations and over 400 computing devices.  IT also delivers and supports the City's eGovernment initiative and handles all forms of electronic communications such as e-mail and voicemail.

Position Responsibilities

The GIS Technician supports the Information Technology Division ensuring City staff has the most effective resources and technology when dealing with geographically based projects.  Under supervision from the GIS Coordinator, the successful candidate will plan, and organize GIS projects from start to finish according to the required schedules and specifications.  The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  1. Assists GIS Coordinator with GIS related software installs and upgrades.
  2. Assists City staff with technical support and training in regards to GIS related software.
  3. Provides knowledge and guidance on geographically related issues and projects to other City staff.
  4. Create and edit base GIS layers on a regular basis to maintain the most current and accurate information.
  5. Creates project maps and display maps in coordination with City projects.
  6. Performs spatial data analysis, database management, data conversion, research, data entry, and reporting as needed in coordination with City projects.
  7. Assist with troubleshooting and development of GIS related web applications

Position Requirements

Education: Associates degree in Geographic Information Systems or 3 years pursuant of a Bachelor’s degree required. Completed Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Work Experience: Minimum of two years of working experience in ArcMap 10.x, ArcGIS Online and/or other ESRI GIS products required; Work experience with Python and JavaScript, general knowledge of map design and web mapping is preferred.

Technical Skills: Experience in ESRI’s ArcGIS suite of products version 10.0+ is required; basic proficiency in cartographic and map design, understanding of spatial information and Geography required; Proficiency in Microsoft Windows based applications and operating systems required; Basic technical skills and knowledge using Trimble based software and equipment preferred.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a normal office environment. Position does require the ability to lift/pull/push/move/carry up to 30 lbs., and the ability to bend/stand/reach. Must also be able to travel to a variety of different terrains and conditions in the field while carrying GPS equipment. Between 15% and 25% of the time there is pressure associated with a project or activity deadline.
