Status: Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS) position
Hours: Typically two to ten hours per week; may work up to twenty hours per week and up to four games in succession which could range from 3-5 hours in one night. Primary need is for Thursdays with the opportunity to work other nights. Leagues run Sunday through Thursday starting in late April.
Salary: Starts at $25.00/hr
Location: Round Lake and Lake Riley Park in Eden Prairie
Reporting Relationship: Reports to Recreation Supervisor – Adult Athletics & Athletic Facilities
Recreation DivisionThe Recreation Services Division has the responsibility for managing all recreation facilities and providing a variety of affordable recreation programs and services for all age groups and people for all abilities. The staff in this division are responsible for the management of facilities such as the Community Center, the Senior Center, and the Outdoor Center, as well as all other City park buildings and recreation facilities such as swimming beaches, sledding hill, amphitheatre and facilities on school property that are operated in partnership with the School District such as the Oak Point Pool and tennis courts at CMS.
Position ResponsibilitiesThe League Official – Softball Umpire officiates for adult recreation sports league games. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
1) Officiates softball games by facilitating and enforcing local league rules and regulations in a fair and consistent manner while demonstrating independent and sound judgment
2) Effectively manage the game by communicating effectively with individuals who may be irate or upset with game decisions.
3) Promotes fair play, good sportsmanship, and a fun and safe environment for all league participants, players and the general public.
While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Position RequirementsEducation: Knowledge and understanding of all USSSA and local league rules required; must attend the USSSA umpires meeting in the spring to become USSSA certified.
Training: CPR and First Aid certifications preferred. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Work Experience: Prior experience in umpiring adult softball games is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift/pull/push/carry up to 30 lbs.
- Sits, stands, bends, stoops, reaches, runs, and walks intermittently.
- Ability to reach, stand, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch, stop and start running for extended periods of time and avoid obstacles such as hit or thrown balls, players, etc.
- Close and distant vision, peripheral visions, and depth perception.
- The employee will be exposed to dust, loud noises, moving/running participants, and fast moving softballs.
- Ability to work at least four (4) games in succession.
Work Environment
- Games will be played outdoors; may require working in adverse weather conditions at a variety of playing sites.
