Facilities Engineer Position Profile

Status:  Full-time regular position, non-exempt

Salary:  Starts at $27.57 - $32.67 per hour (Depending upon qualifications)

Benefits: Qualifies for full-time benefits date of hire

Location: City Center/Community Center

Hours: Typical work schedule will be 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday; work shift may vary based upon business need; possible overtime as needed; after training period, on-call every six weeks.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Facilities Supervisor

Facilities Division

The Facilities Division is responsible for the daily operations, preventive maintenance, remodeling and long term maintenance programs of the 30 major facilities owned by the City and spaces leased by the City. Total square footage of these facilities is about 1 million square feet. The major facilities include the City Center, Community Center, Senior Center, Water Plant, Utilities Garage, Maintenance Facility, 4 Fire Stations, Building 51, the Den Road Liquor Store, the Outdoor Center, 12 Park Shelters and 5 Historical Buildings.  The leased spaces include 2 of the 3 Liquor Stores and the Housing and Community Services space at the Eden Prairie Mall.

Position Responsibilities

The Facilities Engineer supports the Facilities Division to ensure smooth operations of the mechanical, electrical, and facilities safety equipment for City buildings. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  1. Performs preventative maintenance, testing, and repair of all building, mechanical and electrical equipment; uses a variety of hand tools and power tools.
  2. Troubleshoots and repairs systems related to HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire/life/safety, elevators, emergency generators, ice rink refrigeration, pool equipment, pneumatic control, and energy management; assists facilities supervisors in performing inspections of this equipment and documenting the results.
  3. Maintains the City ice rinks and pool facilities by performing ice rink refrigeration maintenance, pool maintenance, and ice re-surfacing operations.
  4. Provides work direction to contractors in the HVAC, electrical, and mechanical trades; provides work direction to Facilities Technicians.
  5. Creates and maintains records and/or inventory for work orders, inspection forms, building equipment, preventive maintenance, and utility and energy usage.
  6. Supports division cross-function initiatives by developing skills, applying technical knowledge, assisting with projects; trains co-workers and staff in specialized skills.

Position Requirements

Education: Two year technical degree in related field required; second class C boiler’s license required; first class C boiler’s license preferred, or, must obtain within 3 years of employment; Certified Pool Operator license preferred or must obtain within first 12 months of employment; Universal Refrigeration license required; ammonia refrigeration experience preferred.

Work Experience: Minimum of five years’ experience with industrial and residential refrigeration, HVAC, boilers, pool operation preferred; experience in building construction, repair, and maintenance of systems and equipment preferred.

Technical Skills: Must have training in HVAC, cooling towers, energy management, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, boilers, chillers, plumbing, fire/safety equipment, pneumatic controls, and reading blue prints.

Physical Requirements: Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required. Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Regularly must be able to climb ladders to reach building roofs.

Working Conditions:  Work is performed inside and outside of buildings, involving driving vehicles to City owned property. Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold.  Conditions can include working in noisy, wet, muddy, slippery or dusty and windy conditions. Position requires incumbent to work on ladders and on roofs.  Position requires incumbent to work with water treatment chemicals.  There is often exposure to traffic and moving equipment.  There is considerable attention to detail when handling equipment in tight quarters or around people.
