Status:  Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS) position, non-exempt

Hours:  Standard business hours (8am-5:00pm), may vary based on business need

Salary:  Starts at $13.00 to $15.50 per hour 

Location: Various parks in Eden Prairie

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Sr. Recreation Supervisor - Youth Development

Recreation Division

The Recreation Services Division has the responsibility for managing all recreation facilities and providing a variety of affordable recreation programs and services for all age groups and people of all abilities. The staff in this division are responsible for the management of facilities such as the Community Center, the Senior Center, and the Outdoor Center, as well as all other City park buildings and recreation facilities such as swimming beaches, sledding hill, amphitheater and facilities on school property that are operated in partnership with the School District such as the Oak Point Pool and tennis courts at CMS.

Position Responsibilities

The Day Camp Counselor - Lead is a Program Instructor II position. This position assists the Senior Recreation Supervisor – Youth & Family in providing programs to all participants in a safe, friendly, and enjoyable atmosphere. The Summer Coordinator also supervises counselors at the summer playgrounds and camp locations. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are: 

  1. Manages the day camps at various locations throughout the city, is the onsite supervisor for the counselors at those sites; conveys expectations of the program and prepares recommendations for the improvement of the program.
  2. Develops, organizes and conveys the program plans to the counselors in the camp setting.
  3. Prepares for the program by organizing supplies, communication prior to and during the camps and being a communication support for parents and guardians.
  4. Assists counselors in the supervision of the campers and the management of their needs.
  5. Prepares year end program and budgeting report for Senior Recreation Supervisor.

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees may be called upon to perform a variety of duties in their roles with the City.

Position Requirements

Education: Completion of at least two (2) years of study in a related post-secondary program.

Work Experience: One (1) year experience in recreation or related field, previous experience supervising seasonal staff, ability to relate to youth and adults; CPR and First Aid certification preferred. Previous experience working with children required; experience developing and implementing programs and activities preferred.
