This role in Sales Tax requires a strong emphasis on boldness, curiosity and accountability.  These skills will support your work including: leading a team of 8-10, delivering on expense minimization, as well as supporting accurate & efficient processes. It will also rely on your accounting skills to serve as key decision maker in accounting policy and controls. Your role will be critical to ensuring the success of Target's core retail operation and new business initiatives by providing thoughtful and responsive support to business partners throughout the company.  In leading the Sales Tax function, your mission will be to ensure:

  • The technical expertise and career development of the team 
  • Target guests can be confident in our sales tax decisions and execution at point of sale - both in store and online 
  • Target procurement teams pay the appropriate amount of sales/use tax for Target purchases
  • Best in class business controls and documentation for sales tax operations related to compliance, accounting, and tax decisions
  • Contemporaneous evaluation of pending and potential legislation as well as support for our Government Affairs team, both locally and nationally
  • Clear, effective framework for supporting full spectrum of  Sales Tax controversy work
  • Enterprise systems and reporting meet the needs of Tax  
About you:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent
  • 10+ years of Sales Tax experience with a national public firm or equivalent experience in a large corporate tax department
  • Strong leadership and team development skills
  • Proven decision making skills and analytical/problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills advocating for tax matters both internally and with external auditors
  • Strong business acumen and customer focus including ability to articulate technical matters and financial statement impact
  • Knowledge of Vertex, Avalara  or similar tax software
  • Knowledge/proficiency in technology including background in utilizing robotics, automation and advanced analytical and data visualization tools
