Position Details

Status:  Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS) position, non-exempt

Hours:  Varies depending on program or camp.   June - August (up to 40 hours per week)

Salary:  Starts at $11.00

Benefits: Does not qualify for City benefits

Location: Park locations, Community Center, Art Center, or Outdoor Center

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Sr. Recreation Supervisor - Youth Development

Recreation Division

The Recreation Services Division has the responsibility for managing all recreation facilities and providing a variety of affordable recreation programs and services for all age groups and people of all abilities. The staff in this division are responsible for the management of facilities such as the Community Center, the Senior Center, and the Outdoor Center, as well as all other City park buildings and recreation facilities such as swimming beaches, sledding hill, amphitheater and facilities on school property that are operated in partnership with the School District such as the Oak Point Pool and tennis courts at CMS.

Position Responsibilities

The Recreation Inclusion Counselor provides the necessary adaptations, accommodations, and supports to individuals who have a disability in general recreation programs, lessons, or camps. The balance of support and freedom within the context of the program is a sensitive area that the Inclusion Counselor must use good judgment. This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact: 

  1. Promotes skill development of participants with disabilities in camps, lessons, and programs.
  2. Assists participants in using age-appropriate self-management skills including communication, self-regulation, self-help skills, motor skills, play and relationship skills.
  3. Provides the opportunity for success for all participants by adapting activities, managing behaviors, providing personal cares, and providing additional assistance as needed.
  4. Encourages participants to be as independent as possible and respects each participant’s unique learning style.
  5. Provides high quality customer service by consistently exhibiting an enthusiastic attitude; greeting participants with a smile, eye contact, and personalized message; responding to questions with accurate information or referring them to an appropriate contact.
  6. Supports program instructor or camp counselor with set up/take down, planning and implementation of activities for all participants.
  7. Communicates with parents/guardians, program staff, and supervisor about the program and participant progress.

While these areas are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.

Position Requirements

Education: High School Diploma in Progress; Two-year degree or higher preferred; CPR (infant, child and adult) and First Aid certification within first 30 days of employment required and must keep their certification current each year. Must be 16 years old by first day of training June 7, 2019.

Work Experience: Basic child development education background or knowledge preferred; experience working with individuals with disabilities, specifically Autism Spectrum preferred; demonstrate patience, flexibility, communication, organization, resourceful, and maintain confidentiality; Must have proven dependability , teamwork, ability to make necessary accommodations and readiness to actively participate in all aspects of the program.

Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT). Behavioral support a plus.
