Mechanical Maintenance Engineers will perform preventive maintenance and repairs of mechanical equipment and systems throughout the Universities properties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operation, maintenance, repairs, and water treatment testing of steam boilers, hydronic boilers, centrifugal chiller, cooling towers and closed loop systems.
  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of air handler units, exhaust fans, air conditioning units, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, refrigeration units, both commercial and residential.
  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of pumping
  • systems associated with heating, cooling and plumbing systems.
  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of swimming pools, whirlpool spas, their water treatment and associated pumping systems.
  • Plumbing repairs and maintenance of drains, sinks, faucets, showers, toilets, flush valves, floor drains, water heaters, water softeners and any axillary plumbing systems.
  • Commercial and residential repairs of refrigerators, stoves, ovens, ranges, dishwashers, clothes washers, and clothes dryers.
  • Maintenance and repair of residential style forced air furnaces, hydronic boilers, air conditioners and their axillary systems.
  • Operation, maintenance and repairs of pneumatic air compressors, vacuum system, air dryers and their axillary systems.
  • Operation, maintenance and repair of pneumatic control systems as related to the temperature control of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Operating of the computerized Energy Management System (EMS) where it applies to the temperature control of mechanical equipment and systems, but not the management, utilization functions or programming of the system.

Potential Shift Hours (Based On Seniority)

Monday – Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm

Tuesday – Saturday 7:00am – 3:30pm

Monday – Friday 10:00am – 6:30pm

Monday – Friday 2:30pm – 11:00pm


QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications and Education Requirements for all classifications

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including MS Office, email, word documents and basic spreadsheets navigation.
  • Be a member of a bargaining unit (local 70).

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Graduate from a two (2) years trade school in the field of mechanical maintenance.
  3. Have five (5) years' experience in the field of mechanical maintenance.
  4. Minimum of a Minnesota 1st Class C boiler license.
  5. EPA Universal Refrigeration Certificate.
  6. Certified Pool Operators Certificate.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Two (2) years' experience in the field of mechanical maintenance.
  3. Minimum of a Minnesota 2nd Class C boiler license.
  4. EPA Universal Refrigeration Certificate or the ability to obtain it in twelve (12) months
  5. Certified Pool Operators Certificate or the ability to obtain it in six (6) months.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer I

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. One (1) years' experience in the field of mechanical maintenance.
  3. Minimum of a Minnesota Special Class C boiler license.
  4. Certified Pool Operators Certificate or the ability to obtain it in six (6) months.

Preferred Skills

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer III

  • Five (5) years' experience working with steam boilers larger than 300 horsepower.
  • Three (3) years' experience working with air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • One (1) year experience working with swimming pools and whirlpool spas.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer II

  • Three (3) years' experience working with steam or hot water boilers.
  • Two (2) years' experience working with air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • One (1) year experience working with swimming pools and whirlpool spas.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineer I

  • Five (5) years' experience working custodial/maintenance of buildings, having some boiler and plumbing repair experience.
  • One (1) year experience working with steam or hot water boilers.

Working Conditions

The physical demand level of the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer is heavy requiring occasional application of 76-100 pounds of force, and frequent application of 46-60 pounds of force. The engineer will spend approximately 2/3 of their shift standing, walking or climbing. At times the engineer will be required to crawl, crouch, or stoop. The engineer will often be required to reach overhead or bend to low levels. The engineer will frequently have to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and on rare occasions may need to briefly lift or support items weighing 100 pounds. The engineer must have excellent hand dexterity and strong grip strength. Occasional work in hot, dusty and noisy environments may be required.
