Parks Maintenance Technician Position Profile

Status:  Full-time regular, non-exempt

Benefits: Qualifies for full-time benefits date of hire

Salary: Starts at $25.91 to $30.87 per hour, depending upon qualifications

Location: Maintenance Facility (15150 Technology Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55344)

Hours: Standard business hours (7:00am-3:30pm) on a flexible schedule that will include weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Must respond in emergency situations.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Parks Maintenance Supervisor

Parks & Natural Resources

The Parks and Natural Resources Division is responsible for providing the citizens and users of the City’s park system with safe, properly maintained, and high quality facilities. The Division is responsible for developing and maintaining the park and open space system with facilities that meet the community needs. Wildlife, forestry and natural resources management are a top priority of this division.

Position Responsibilities

The Parks Maintenance Technician accomplishes tasks within a team environment to provide the citizens of Eden Prairie and other users of the City’s parks system with safe and properly maintained facilities. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  1. Performs the daily operations of the park and forestry maintenance programs ensuring work safety, reporting accidents in a timely manner, supervising and assisting park department seasonal employees.
  2. Develops a working knowledge of park system and operation policies; develops the skills to operate park maintenance equipment.
  3. Serves as a direct liaison to customers in daily park operations; responds to issues and addresses concerns; upholds reputation of City to the public.
  4. Responds to emergency situations; must maintain appropriate licenses per position requirements.
  5. Completes projects as directed.
  6. Maintains an excellent driving record and a Commercial Driver’s License.
  7. In snow events, ensure that park locations and trails are properly snow plowed in a timely manner. Assist the streets division with snow-plowing on all other streets.

Position Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) is required; Associates Degree or two year technical degree/certificate preferred; Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class A) with air brakes and tanker endorsement preferred and required to obtain within six months of employment.

Work Experience: One to two years of related experience required; previous experience with landscaping or heavy equipment operation preferred. Preventive maintenance experience with turf, irrigation, light construction, and maintenance equipment preferred. Additionally, previous experience with tree felling, pruning, safe chainsaw operation, and snow removal experience is also preferred.

Physical Requirements: Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required. Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles.  Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold.  Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery, dusty, icy and windy conditions. At these times there may be intermittent exposure to very disagreeable working conditions.  Some assignments involve exposure to pesticides and fertilizer/chemicals.  Most work is performed off of publicly traveled areas but workers must pay attention to the public using the parks and trail system. There is considerable attention to detail when handling equipment in tight quarters or around people. Occasionally there is exposure to traffic and moving equipment.
