Job Description:

Job Summary

Provides dental services for patients; including SMSC Community members and their families, SMSC employees and their families, and Native Americans living in Scott County, in a clinic setting. Teaches and counsels patients regarding prescribed dental treatments and also emphasizes preventive care and good oral hygiene.


Job Duties:

  1. Provide patients with a thorough oral examination to diagnose current dental conditions utilizing x-rays, dental tools, and other diagnostic procedures.
  2. Educate patients and provide instruction on diet, brushing, flossing, the use of fluorides, and other aspects of dental care.
  3. Perform various dental treatments to include preventive, endodontic, periodontic, restorative, prosthetic, and orthodontic services such as applying sealants, filling cavities, repairing or extracting damaged teeth, root canals, crowns, oral surgery, and other dental services within the scope of the respective Dentist's competencies. 
  4. Administer general (nitrous oxide) and local anesthetics as needed as well as prescribe medications as indicated.
  5. Document patient information gathered during the evaluation, observation, treatment provided, patient progress, and any relevant medical information for each patient within the confidential patient record.
  6. Complies with HIPAA rules and maintains all patient information confidentially and securely.
  7. Assess and discuss treatment options with patients and develop a treatment plan to restore or improve dental health.
  8. Provide direction and clinical supervision of dental clinic staff to include Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants.
  9. May be required to travel up to two weeks in a calendar year to treat patients through the SMSC Mobile Unit.

Requirements:
  1. Successful completion of the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) from an accredited college or university.
  2. Must be currently licensed as a Dentist by and in good standing with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. Must also be certified by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry to administer nitrous oxide.
  3. One year of Dentistry work experience. 
  4. Good computer skills to include MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as other health care related software as needed.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Must hold and maintain Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. If not CPR certified upon hire, must obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
  This position must be able to travel and treat patients on our mobile unit.
