TAX ATTORNEY/TAXPAYER CLINIC DIRECTOR
POSITION: Mid‑Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) seeks a full-time staff attorney to work for its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) in Minneapolis. The position may include the title and duties of Clinic Director, depending on the experience of the candidate.
Legal Aid provides free civil legal representation to clients with low incomes and seniors throughout 21 counties in central Minnesota and to people with disabilities throughout the state. The LITC serves low-income people with disputes with the IRS throughout the state, with most of our full-service clients living in Hennepin County. Legal Aid’s focus is to provide the legal help needed so that its clients can meet their most basic needs such as access to safe and secure housing, safety from domestic violence, access to government programs that provide baseline cash and food support, and access to health care.
Legal Aid is supported by funding from the State of Minnesota, the federal government, local governments, the United Way, foundations, other local law firms and corporations, etc. Legal Aid enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support from the organized bar. Legal Aid does not receive funds from the Legal Services Corporation.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Attorney will serve clients with federal income tax disputes through our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. The Attorney will also conduct outreach and education activities for potential clients and for legal services attorneys and advocates throughout the state.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants licensed in Minnesota or eligible for immediate admission by reciprocity are preferred, but we will consider 2019 spring graduates. Applicants must also have:
1) Demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the needs of low-income/vulnerable clients;
2) Commitment to working as a team member to serve client needs;
3) Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills;
4) At least basic experience with federal income tax matters; and
5) Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office.
Experience in poverty law practice or equivalent general practice is preferred. Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences and relevant language skills are pluses.
SALARY: The salary will depend on experience, but is capped at $59,016 (year 8 staff attorney level) plus benefits including vacation, sick leave, family medical coverage, life insurance, and both short-term and long-term disability insurance.
