About This Opportunity:

As the labeling lead for specific Target Owned Brand food categories, you will ensure that food packaging and communications comply with relevant Federal and State labeling regulations (ex: FDA, USDA) and Target standards. Working with internal cross-functional partners and external vendors, you will provide guidance and identify food labeling and claims solutions that meet regulatory requirements, deliver against business goals and protect guest safety. You also will apply technical expertise to advance broader projects related to nutrition, labeling, and compliance.

  • Provide guidance and influence Target Owned Brand food products, packaging and communications through collaboration with product development, buyers, marketing, legal and external vendor partners
  • Review and approve food labeling information (e.g., product names, ingredients, nutrition, allergens, claims) for regulatory compliance; investigate and resolve discrepancies with internal partners and external vendors
  • Monitor and evaluate pending labeling regulations and external developments in assigned subject areas; determine business and product implications, and inform implementation plans
  • Develop internal labeling and claims guidance and standards in partnership with legal and other stakeholders
  • Contribute regulatory and nutrition expertise to health & wellness initiatives and communications
  • Represent Target externally, including participation in trade and professional associations
  • Identify opportunities to advance labeling process and systems improvements
  • Communicate Target labeling requirements and processes to buyers, vendors, brokers, marketing and creative, and assist with training

    Qualifications
  • Minimum BS in Food Science, Nutrition or a related field; MS preferred.
  • 5+ years of technical experience in consumer packaged foods; 2+ years food labeling experience required; food manufacturer experience, preferred.
  • Regulatory expertise, including experience interpreting and applying food labeling regulations to products.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expert in at least one specialized area (ex: ingredients, food product development, claims, FDA or USDA labeling regulations, health/nutrition communications, labeling systems or process development).
  • Excellent communication skills, and proven ability to build partnerships and work across teams.
  • Strong attention to details, organized, and timeline-focused.
  • Strong problem-solving and research skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with specifications, labeling, artwork/packaging, or nutrient database systems, a plus.
