Position Summary

The Early Childhood Center at St. Catherine University invites applications for an Assistant Teacher. This position is 0.75 FTE (40 hours/week for 39 weeks/year) with time off June-August. This position is responsible for providing support to the teacher in the classroom in implementing curriculum plans, supervising children, providing behavior guidance, and maintaining the classroom environment.

The Early Childhood Center serves St. Catherine University in support of its mission to educate women to lead and influence by meeting the vital need for quality care and education of the young children of St. Catherine University students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community. It is our mission to assist children in their process of self-creation, helping them to develop physically, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially in order that they may become the individuals that they are meant to be and future leaders in a diverse and global society by offering two distinct models of early childhood education.

Responsibilities:
The Assistant Teacher provides support to the teacher in the classroom in implementing curriculum plans, supervising children, providing behavior guidance, and maintaining the classroom environment. Additionally, assistant teachers may be in charge of the children during non-program hours at the beginning and end of each day (AM and PM extended program) during center hours, as well as during time periods when the teacher is not present with the assistance of a University student aide. The schedule is 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Required Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Baccalaureate degree in early childhood education, child development, elementary education or early childhood special education from an accredited college or university and 40 weeks or more experience working with children (teacher, assistant teacher, aide, student intern) or baccalaureate degree in any field and 12 quarter credits in early childhood education, child development, elementary education or early childhood special education from an accredited college or university and at least 40 weeks or more of experience working with children (teacher, assistant teacher, aide, student intern).
• Classroom management skills, including, ability to discipline and guide the children in an appropriate manner.
• Communication skills (both oral and written), organizational skills.
• Ability to work with peers.
• Flexibility and patience.
• Ability to sit in small chairs, sit on the floor, and stand for long periods of time.
• Undergraduate coursework in early childhood education, child development, elementary education or early childhood special education preferred.
• Experience working with diverse communities and/or children with diverse needs preferred.
• Certified in first aid and CPR preferred.
• Bilingual skills preferred.
