JOB SUMMARY

The nature of the position is to assist Dr. Ippoliti manage a research lab with a large number of undergraduate research students. The purpose of the job is to keep the students safe and the lab clean, as well as help students by answering questions concerning their research projects, and at the same time carry out chemical reactions. The person must also order chemicals for lab and is responsible for safe chemical waste disposal. This position requires the person to have two courses in organic chemistry and at least 2 years of research experience in an organic chemistry laboratory performing synthesis of organic compounds. The person should be familiar with chemical research techniques and terminology. The person should be proficient in column chromatography and other organic lab techniques. The person must be able to run a JEOL nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and work up the data using MestReNova software and iNMR software. The person must be able to teach organic chemistry labs. The person must have strong organizational skills.

This is a one year term, benefits eligible position. The position is expected to last at least one year, depending on the business needs of the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform organic synthesis – set up reactions, perform extractions, recrystallizations and other purification techniques
  • Run a JEOL nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and work up data with MestReNova and iNMR software.
  • Manage a research lab – direct and answer questions for at least 10 students. Assure that all students follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Order and track chemicals and track all wastes in lab
  • Write monthly research reports
  • Teach CHEM201/202 (organic chemistry) labs – 3 four hour labs

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA in Chemistry or Biochemistry
  • At least 1 year doing synthetic organic chemistry
  • Be able to run column chromatography and run Biotage LC
  • Operate a microwave reactor, operate a JEOL NMR spectrometer, operate a Thales Nano H-cube Pro
  • Utilize MestReNova and iNMR to work up nmr data
  • In depth knowledge of organic reaction mechanisms

This is a one year term, benefits eligible position. The position is expected to last at least one year, depending on the business needs of the department.
