POSITION:  Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) is seeking a staff attorney or advocate for a full-time position with the Youth Law Project (YLP) based in its Minneapolis Office. 

 

Legal Aid’s mission is to advocate for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy, and independent lives in their communities.  Legal Aid provides free civil legal representation to clients with low incomes and seniors throughout 21 counties in central Minnesota, and to people with disabilities throughout the state.  Legal Aid is supported by funding from the State of Minnesota, the federal government, local governments, the United Way, foundations, local law firms and corporations, etc.  Legal Aid enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support from, the organized bar.  Legal Aid does not receive funds from the Legal Services Corporation.

Legal Aid’s YLP provides free legal advice and representation to Hennepin County youth in connection with emancipation, obtaining necessary documents for youth, access to medical and mental health care and social services, school discipline, independent living issues, homelessness and other civil legal matters.  The YLP also receives funding to help youth statewide who are being or are at risk of being sexually exploited or trafficked.  The YLP conducts training and community legal education programs on youth law issues

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The attorney or advocate will advise and represent clients in the matters described above. The position includes community outreach and intake at youth centers and shelters.  Additional responsibilities may include policy advocacy and community education.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Attorney applicants must be licensed in Minnesota, registered for the July 2019 Minnesota Bar examination, or eligible for admission by reciprocity.  All applicants must have:

  1. Demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, the needs of low-income/vulnerable people and communities;
  2. Commitment to working as a team member to serve the needs of youth;
  3. A desire to appear in court and/or administrative proceedings to advance client rights;
  4. Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills; and
  5. Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office.

Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences and relevant language skills are pluses. Experience working with youth of different ages, backgrounds and experiences is also a plus.

SALARY:  $50,000 to $60,264 (year ten) for the attorney position, and $34,392 to $40,080 (year ten) for the advocate position, depending on experience.  Benefits include vacation, sick leave, family medical, life, and short/long-term disability insurance.
