Position Title: Director of Tax

Department/Location: Financial Services / Bismarck, ND

Position Purpose: 

This position is responsible for management of the Tax function and serves as an advisor to the Vice President & Controller for Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) and its subsidiaries, ensuring compliance with various governmental tax laws and regulations while minimizing, to the extent possible, the companies’ tax liability. This position interprets and communicates tax information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), state agencies, Canadian Federal and Provincial agencies, as well as legislative bodies, external auditors, consultants, management, and staff. The incumbent’s responsibility is to inform management of tax consequences of any proposed and existing financial transactions, policies, business plans, or activities of which the incumbent has been made aware of.

This position is responsible for all corporate federal, state, and local tax return preparation and reporting, and third party tax audits in the states, countries, and localities in which the companies operate. This position is responsible for appropriate treatment of tax positions on all tax returns, financial statements, annual reports, and other financial records, as required by federal and state departments of revenue and other taxing authorities, and required accounting standards associated with income and other taxes.

Qualifications:

To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must have thorough knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations as it relates to corporate and cooperative separate and consolidated income tax reporting, and thorough knowledge of accounting principles and theory. This is acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field, and 10 years of related experience in corporate tax. Advanced specialized knowledge of and extensive experience with the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations and State Tax regulations, as well as a solid understanding of and experience with Federal and State Tax Audit processes and procedures are required. The incumbent must have experience in completing all areas of a corporate tax return. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with minimal direction are required. Previous experience acting as a lead or previous supervisory experience is required. This position also requires strong analytical skills and proficiency in personal computer operation. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate and the ability to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills is also required.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

This position requires frequent sitting and standing/walking; and occasional reaching below and above shoulder level, use of keyboard/computer, bending, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. It also requires finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires good hearing and vision, and the ability to speak. It also requires the ability to develop plans, procedures and goals; present information to others; and work under stress to complete projects within deadlines.
