About us:

Target is an iconic brand, a Fortune 50 company and one of America's leading retailers.

To match the signature style and passion of Target's distinctive and beloved retail brand, Target Legal Affairs is a dynamic and deeply knowledgeable team of legal pros, each with valuable expertise from several disciplines. Whether specializing in government affairs, policy, risk management, regulatory compliance, ethics or employee and labor relations, this team advocates for Target and its business plans in communities across the nation and works across the entire company to provide internal clients with cohesive guidance. We are committed to being internal experts to both internal and external entities on key issues that affect Target's ability to productively do business. We focus on defining, investigating, anticipating and ultimately mitigating risk in all its forms. We apply our grasp of brand law by overseeing, maintaining and ensuring correct, consistent and authorized use of Target's signature Bullseye logo, assets and other trademarked material. We help protect Target and its subsidiaries by applying our comprehensive understanding and interpretation of the laws that govern our stores, distribution centers and corporate locations. Here, you'll enjoy working autonomously with a healthy work-life balance. Your passion for learning the business and building relationships with the senior leaders and key business partners that you support will be key to tackling the ever-changing legal challenges we face in a dynamic and fast-paced retail landscape. From brand and patent law to contract development and negotiations, you'll be challenged and gratified by a role with Target Legal Affairs.

A role in Intellectual Property and Brands means working with the Brands team to manage all of Target's intellectual property while advising teams who use owned brands. You'll review and search our brands and products to analyze them against others' intellectual property and clear new items for Target. And you'll help execute the registration and licensing of Target's intellectual property while monitoring and enforcing their correct usage and defending against infringement.

As a trademark paralegal in the Target Brands group, you will provide project management, business partnership and expertise with regard to trademark and copyright clearance, prosecution, enforcement, maintenance and defense. This role will require you to interact independently in support of Target Brands' business partners and other paralegals and attorneys within Target's Law Department.
  • Maintain a high-level working knowledge of US and foreign trademark and copyright laws, while regularly applying that knowledge to protect and enforce Target's intellectual property rights.
  • Regularly represent the trademark team through direct contact with attorneys and other paralegals within the Law Department, key business partners, the US Patent and Trademark Office, US Copyright Office, outside legal counsel in the US and abroad, and outside legal vendors.
  • Respond to requests for trademark and copyright clearance, conduct research and search trademark and copyright databases, analyze search results, make recommendations, and provide direct responses to business partners with business and legal recommendations and risk assessments.
  • Partner with trademark attorneys to manage the day-to-day responsibilities of a large U.S. and foreign trademark portfolio, including all aspects of trademark prosecution, maintenance, defense, and inter partes proceedings.
  • Investigate and scrutinize third-party use of use of trademarks and copyrighted material. Prioritize and direct enforcement efforts and manage follow-up.
  • Review and analyze internal use of trademarks in advertising and on goods, packaging and labeling. Resolve issues concerning trademark use and registration from internal business partners.
  • Monitor the competitive landscape to identify potentially infringing uses of Target's intellectual property in collaboration with outside vendors to conduct use investigations and direct outside counsel regarding enforcement actions, including oppositions, cancellations, cease and desist letters and litigation.
  • Review and approve outside counsel and vendor work product and billing, ensuring work product standards and budgets are met.
  • Develop resources and provide training to business partners, including preparing presentations and training materials and leading training discussions.
  • Conduct trademark and copyright due diligence from time to time in connection with acquisition or licensing of third-party rights, including co-branding initiatives and manage contracts, agreements and other documentation related to those initiatives.

Job duties may change at any time due to business needs.
