Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) is seeking a Grants Manager.  The position is based in Legal Aid’s Minneapolis, Minnesota office.  The Grants Manager will be responsible for maintaining and expanding funding by assisting with managing and applying for both private and public grants.  The Grants Manager will work with members of the Management Team to meet the grant needs throughout our service area.

Legal Aid provides free legal representation in civil law matters to low-income people, the elderly, and people with disabilities.  Legal Aid’s mission is to advocate for the legal rights of these vulnerable people so they may enjoy safe, healthy, and independent lives in strong communities.  Legal Aid’s goal is to leverage its limited resources with the skill and expertise of its dedicated legal staff and to live out its mission by achieving meaningful improvement in the lives of as many clients as possible each year.  Legal Aid accomplishes this goal by providing legal advice and representation to individual clients, engaging in policy advocacy to achieve systemic change at all levels of government, developing collaborations with community organizations also serving Legal Aid clients, and providing outreach and legal education to clients, organizations, and the community.  Legal Aid is committed to including an explicit focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in its workplace. 

Legal Aid serves clients throughout 21 counties in central Minnesota, and to people with disabilities throughout the state.  It has multiple offices located throughout its service area.  Legal Aid is supported by funding from the State of Minnesota, the federal government, local governments, the United Way, foundations, local law firms and corporations, etc.  Legal Aid enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support from, the organized bar.  Legal Aid does not receive funds from the Legal Services Corporation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches and identifies potential new funding based on Legal Aid’s needs in consultation with the Executive Director and Deputy Directors
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in comparing and evaluating grant opportunities to make recommendations to the Executive Director and Deputy Directors
  • Assists Deputy Directors and other legal work supervisors with preparing and submitting grant proposals in accordance with the RFP and the requirements of public and private funding sources
  • For active grants, monitors and ensures Legal Aid’s compliance with all grant requirements, including:
    • Creating and maintaining an electronic file for the grant in SharePoint
    • Scheduling regular meetings with grant leads and appropriate Administration staff to monitor progress on grant deliverables and expenditures
    • Coordinating and preparing information for funder meetings and monitoring visits
  • For grant reporting:
    • Developing and maintaining systems to collect data needed for grant reporting, to ensure data accuracy and quality, and to ensure necessary data is maintained in Legal Aid’s case management system
    • Identifying client stories that are illustrative of grant deliverables
    • Coordinating with the Comptroller to ensure needed financial documentation is prepared
    • If requested, preparing drafts of narrative reports
    • Submitting reports in the manner required by the funder
    • Filing reports and supporting documentation in SharePoint
  • Assists Deputy Directors and legal work supervisors in establishing and maintaining strong positive relationships with funders
  • Miscellaneous duties related to revenue acquisition and maintenance, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required:

  1. Demonstrated interest in, and commitment to access to justice for low-income/vulnerable people and historically marginalized communities
  2. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  3. Three years of professional grant writing experience, including preparation and management of grants
  4. Ability to work semi-independently while also communicating with Legal Aid team members
  5. Ability to work effectively and efficiently on multiple projects at the same time
  6. Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills, and
  7. Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office

Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences and relevant language skills are pluses.

SALARY:  $50,016 to $55,488 depending on experience.  Benefits include vacation and sick leave, as well as family medical, life, and short-term/long-term disability insurance.
