The Board of Directors of Clearwater-Polk Electric Cooperative is seeking a qualified and engaged leader to succeed the current General Manager who plans to retire in early 2021. Clearwater-Polk has retained Eide Bailly to facilitate the search process.

Clearwater-Polk Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric cooperative whose mission is to provide economical and reliable electricity while ensuring the safety and well-being of the employees and members with consideration for the environment. Headquartered in Bagley, Minnesota, the cooperative is a Touchstone Energy Partner serving approximately 4,400 members in Clearwater County and portions of Polk, Beltrami, Red Lake and Hubbard Counties in Northwestern Minnesota. Clearwater-Polk has 15 dedicated full-time employees, over 1,500 miles of distribution line, annual revenue of $10 million and nearly $27 million in utility plant. Clearwater-Polk receives wholesale power from Minnkota Power Cooperative.

The cooperative is proud to provide service to Itasca State Park, the headwaters of the Mississippi.  Located in the heart of lake country, it is a great community to live and is famous for its fishing, boating, snowmobiling, hunting, and camping.

Successful GM candidates will have the ability to lead and manage risk, be forward-thinking, have high integrity, possess excellent relationship building and communication skills, demonstrate the ability to achieve results and meet the challenges of the future. Candidates are desired to have, at a minimum, 5-10 years of experience at an electric utility with a minimum of 5 years at the senior management level.  Cooperative experience is preferred.  In addition, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance or relevant degree is preferred.

Responsibility to the Board: The General Manager reports directly to and is accountable to a seven-member Board of Directors who are elected by the Membership. In this role, the General Manager administers policies of the board and carries out its directives. Recommends short and long-range strategies to maintain financial health, necessary physical plant, and efficient operation. Administers a wage and salary plan and recommends compensation levels, employee benefits, training, and development programs to the Board for approval.

Labor and employee relations: Provides leadership to develop and foster a positive work environment. Encourages staff participation and suggestions. Utilizes appropriate delegation methods. Provides necessary training for staff growth and development, succession planning and safety practices.

Responsible for development and management of the annual budget and assists in all phases of the budget process.  Works with department heads for departmental budget planning and with the office staff for overall budget planning and presentation to the Board. 

Professional relationships:  Maintains positive working relationships with appropriate officials at the local, county, state, and federal level to promote the needs and objectives of the Cooperative.

Community relations:  Ensures the Cooperative effectively communicates pro-actively with, and is responsive to, the needs of a diverse population of member-owners.  Establishes Cooperative presence in appropriate community service organizations and encourages participation in selected community activities.
