The Human Resources, Equity and Inclusion division at St. Catherine University invites applications for an Employment Attorney position. This is a regular, full-time position.

The Human Resources, Equity and Inclusion department creates structural support that aligns with the strategic goals of the university to drive a culture of inclusive excellence and attract and retain faculty and staff. The Employment Attorney will act as a legal consultant, advising human resources and other leaders regarding risk management; clearly communicating risk factors and potential consequences (put simply), and offering defensible solutions for leaders to pursue in collaboration with Human Resources leaders. Consultation around risk will primarily occur in employment related matters including wage and hour laws, ADAA , FMLA , Title IX, unemployment, worker's compensation, labor relations, contract negotiations, policy review and development, employee handbooks and compliance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Foster and advance diversity, equity and inclusion through all aspects of position, collaborating across the university with individuals of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
  • Evidence personal and professional integrity in all interactions with faculty, staff, students and community stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and handbooks with input and review from HR leadership.
  • Provide advice and counsel regarding hiring and separation processes and participates in the development and implementation of guidelines and policies relating to employee benefits, labor relations, and employment law.
  • Review and approve all legal agreements with health care providers, brokers, retirement plan providers, insurance organization and vendors and other legal documents.
  • Develop, review and modify all employment contracts in collaboration with HR team members.
  • Partner with the Lead Title IX Coordinator to ensure compliance with regulations and to strengthen a culture that supports a safe and respectful learning, working and living environment.
  • Assist the Lead Title IX Coordinator in monitoring enforcement and ensuring prompt, effective and equitable investigations.
  • Train the Human Resources team and the university community on any appropriate areas of subject matter expertise.
  • Coordinate the investigation process to ensure fair and equitable investigations for complaints of discrimination and harassment, hostile work / education environment, and bullying including internal or external investigator selection, monitoring the investigation process and ensuring that complete investigation records are maintained.
  • Advise department and leaders regarding compliance with employment laws and federal and local regulations, developing positive relationships with any applicable regulators.
  • Manage university legal representation in litigation and administrative proceedings related to employment law.
  • Collaborate with CFO to select, retain and monitor the work of outside counsel on a case-by-case basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Five years of employment law experience as a practicing employment law attorney.
  • Seven years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Member in good standing of a state bar.
  • Current license to practice in Minnesota.
  • Experience developing legal strategies and objectives that align and support human resources and organization goals.
  • Experience engaging and managing outside counsel.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

  • One year of experience in a university environment.
  • Working knowledge of Title IX.
  • Experience leading or conducting investigations relating to harassment, discrimination, hostile education or hostile work environment.
