As one of Attorney General Keith Ellison's criminal justice reform initiatives, the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General is seeking an attorney to implement and direct a statewide Conviction Review Unit (CRU) to conduct extrajudicial review of criminal convictions in cases with plausible allegations of actual innocence.

Throughout the nation, there has been a growing number of exonerations of people convicted of crimes they did not commit.  Acknowledging the potential for mistakes in the criminal justice system, it is incumbent upon prosecutors to develop systems to review cases where mistakes may have affected findings of guilt or innocence of the accused.  A statewide CRU will provide a mechanism to conduct fact-based review of convictions to ensure their integrity and to ensure that justice is done in cases of wrongful conviction.

The Director of the CRU will work independently and with the assistance of an advisory board to develop protocols, standards and policies for the creation of the CRU.  This will include case intake procedures, standards of review for intake and potential vacation of convictions, and developing procedures for investigations and recommendations.  The Director will lead case investigations and ultimately make a recommendation in each case to the Attorney General.  The Director will also work to identify recurring errors and make recommendations for improved policies and procedures within the criminal justice system to help avoid wrongful convictions.
