Job Details

The Office of the Minnesota Attorney General is seeking an attorney with at least 3 years of significant civil litigation experience to join our Human Services Division.  Attorneys in the Human Services Division enjoy a dynamic and varied civil litigation practice.  This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified professional to join a highly committed team that handles important public safety and legal matters for the State of Minnesota.

Attorneys in the division represent the Department of Human Services before state district and appellate courts, federal district and appellate courts, agency Human Services judges, and the Office of Administrative Hearings, in all kinds of matters that can include licensing, section 1983 civil rights litigation, and reductions in custody for individuals committed as mentally ill and dangerous, sexual psychopathic personality, or sexually dangerous person. Attorneys in the division also regularly try cases and engage in significant pretrial discovery and motion practice on large, complex cases, including class actions.  The ideal candidate should have at least three years of significant civil litigation experience, and that experience does not need to be limited to human services litigation.

Requirements:  Applicants should have good academic credentials, excellent written and oral communication skills, strong research and analytical abilities, good judgment and character, and strong professional work ethic and writing skills are essential.  Applicants must be able to serve the public with a high level of distinction.

We offer a great benefits package!  The State of Minnesota offers a comprehensive benefits package including low cost medical and dental insurance, employer paid life insurance, short and long term disability, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, retirement plan, tax-deferred compensation, generous vacation and sick leave, and 11 paid holidays each year.

Public service with this office may qualify applicants to have part of their student loans forgiven under a federal student loan forgiveness program for state government employees.  (Visit www.studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service for more information.)

Applications:  Priority applications by February 12th, but we will continue to accept applications until the position has been filled. Attorneys wishing to apply should submit a cover letter and resume that includes relevant civil litigation experience, and a writing sample excerpt (no longer than 5 pages) to:
