About the Job:
The Item Intelligence Group is a new product team within Target Digital responsible for driving elevated insights, data model and process optimizations, and automated remediation capabilities within the Item ecosystem at Target. In close partnership with the Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics teams, this group will leverage machine learning and AI to identify and automate new capabilities that deliver on the promise of assortment flexibility and Item profitability. In short, Item Intelligence is at the heart of a new strategy to build Item data management as an accelerant and amplifier to Target's curated assortment strategy. As the Director of Product Management for Item Intelligence, you will own the product vision, portfolio strategy and roadmap for this new team.

As a people leader, you will be responsible for managing a team of highly capable product managers of varying levels of experience to deliver outsized impact. This is a high performing team, stacked with experienced team members working in concert to bring shape to a highly ambiguous and critically important product portfolio. In this capacity, you will act as coach and mentor to build a strong team culture that is pragmatic in its approach to ambitious goals. You are experienced and comfortable using constructive feedback and insights to motivate the team, guiding their development and continued growth as influencers, visionaries and impact drivers.

As the Director of Product Management, you are accountable for succeeding against identified business outcomes and metrics, driving alignment with all partner teams within the Digital, Merchandising, Data Sciences, Stores and Supply Chain organizations. You are an excellent storyteller, able to influence without authority and distill technically complex concepts into non-technical, easily understandable elements. You are able to work with and present to team members at all levels, including senior leadership, as you negotiate and remove barriers for your team.

Additionally, as the product leader for Item Intelligence, you have domain expertise around Machine Learning application (e.g., classification, regression, clustering, deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.) and have a pragmatic point of view of the application in a business environment. You are a builder with know how in leveraging raw talent to build a successful ML product discipline, including the set-up of ML based operating routines in support of your product work. You are able to recognize when a problem is best solved leveraging machine learning versus a more traditional algorithm. You know the meaning behind "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" in this context. You drive discovery with a test and learn approach, developing hypothesis and a robust set of capabilities to validate or disprove them overtime. You are learning obsessed with a flexible mind, and impact driven.

Ideally, you have prior digital retail experience, but more importantly you possess prior experience in a consumer software product company having worked on structured and unstructured data problems that drive material P&L impact. You understand the theoretical but live in the applied, and are able to drive innovative and scalable solutions across multiple pyramids within Target. Job duties may change at any time due to business needs.

About you:
  • 4-year college degree (or equivalent experience) in computer science, mathematics or similarly technically complex field; Advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years of hands-on Digital product experience or equivalent domain experience, including SDLC and Agile methodologies, building large-scale systems with a Customer centric, iterative and data driven approach
  • 4+ year's experience delivering multiple AI-enabled products working closely with science and engineering teams
  • Ability to script in Python and use data science tools like Spark is a plus
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to influence at a strategic leadership level, cross functionally, and facilitate communications between business and technology teams
  • Strategic mindset and bias for action with strong ability for strategic planning, defining OKRs and driving business outcomes
  • Ability to lead and influence a team while fostering relationships across multiple enterprise-wide teams
  • Data driven decision making
  • Ability to troubleshoot platform operations, potentially via direct interaction with REST APIs
  • Previous Digital Retail experience preferred
