A role with Employee Relations means the opportunity to provide legal counsel on internal employee relations matters for our domestic field, headquarters and international locations. Your internal clients will be Human Resources and various business leaders, and you'll consult on investigations and respond to both internal and external claims.

Under the general guidance of the Stores Employee Relations ("ER") attorney team, the Lead ER Paralegal, Litigation, strategically manages all phases of litigation and the litigation process (including but not limited to new matter intake, fact investigation/discovery, motion practice, summary judgment, mediation, and trial preparation). Works to ensure that the services provided in connection with litigation represent Target's brand, mission, and philosophy. Regularly partners with outside counsel and key internal partners to assist with the defense of litigation as well as to proactively develop strategies for delivering favorable litigation results in the most cost-effective manner possible.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supports Stores ER attorney team by managing all phases of litigation and the litigation process and by managing relationships with outside counsel on a wide array of litigation and other legal matters.
  • Develops and executes litigation strategy with outside counsel, including analysis of risk and assessment of litigation costs to drive favorable results in the most cost-effective manner. Identifies and appropriately shares trends or themes that may emerge during the course of litigation with key partners in order to address trends, reduce risk, and enhance Target's position in litigation.
  • Facilitates discovery in litigation, including partnering with internal resources to collect pertinent information related to defense, reviewing information collected in discovery, determining appropriate responses, and analyzing the impact of information collected on risk assessment in conjunction with Stores ER attorney team. Facilitates defense of Target matters by training outside counsel on Target's policies, procedures (including ER/LR billing and litigation management procedures), as well as Target's business.
  • Attends depositions and mediations, including occasional travel, as needed. Negotiates as necessary during mediations and, in partnership with the Stores ER attorney team, works to settle litigation matters. Trains and holds outside counsel accountable to Target billing guidelines and best practices.
  • Responsible for implementing internal processes that result in improvements and efficiencies to Target's litigation management and outside counsel management.
  • Assists with responses to subpoenas and other governmental requests, as needed.
  • Responds to demand letters in consultation with Stores ER attorney team, including fact investigation, assessing risk based on applicable law, and strategically negotiating with opposing counsel.
  • Independently prioritizes workload. Works autonomously to represent the ER team in various projects, such as the development of alternative fee arrangements with outside counsel, store closings, revisions to company policies or practices, and other company initiatives with team member impact.
  • Manages litigation matters within Serengeti/Tracker and other relevant information systems.
  • Develops communications and relationships with field HR clients to maintain a superior understanding of business objectives.
  • Functions as a professional team player within a highly collaborative, highly engaged environment.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned/needed from time to time.

About you:
  • Four-year degree or equivalent, job-related experience.
  • Strong written, communication, and analytical skills.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Prior litigation and/or litigation management experience (in a law firm or corporate setting) strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with employment litigation and/or employment law preferred.
  • Familiarity with managing wage and hour class action litigation preferred.
