JOB PURPOSE:

Develops components and systems for products being created for the Toro Company. Assist management with the identification, development and implementation of new product concepts related to Electrification, Automation, Connectivity and Control.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead electrical development of machines, subsystems and components for next generation products. Design, constructs, and tests working prototypes of electrical products or systems adhering to the requirement of the product specifications and customer requirements.

  • Assist product management in definition and specification of new products and features.

  • Suggests ideas for new technological developments, components, concepts, materials processes to maintain competitive advantage. Suggests improvements for designs and/or design processes for Toro products.

  • Designs to applicable regulatory standards i.e., IEC, C.S.A., U.L., and/or other applicable safety, industry or Toro standards. Works with the appropriate agencies to provide certification within project timeline.

  • Performs engineering analysis to predict the behavior and failure modes of the proposed designs. Analysis tools may include model based analysis or electronic simulation programs.

  • Collaborate with other project design engineers, marketing, research engineers, designers and others on proposed product designs. May be responsible for the work direction of designers, drafters, contract/consulting personnel and others as needed.

  • Responsible for drawing package, bill of material and product specification.

  • Works with test engineer(s) and technicians to develop tests, which simulate the requirements of the customer. Evaluates test data and develops design revisions to solve problems. Works with Manufacturing, Test, Quality Control to ensure proper testing of components or assemblies in production where necessary.

  • Applies the "Total Quality" principals in the daily performance of the job.

  • Provides current product support to areas such as but not exclusively: Legal, Test, Manufacturing, Marketing, Sales, and Customer Service.

  • Create or lead software development required to implement product concepts.

  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

  • Travel to test sites, distributors, customers, vendors, manufacturing facilities, and others as required (5-10%)

  • Ability to work with others or in teams to accomplish goals. Includes task and/or project leadership.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.

  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in electrical high volume consumer product development.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to create and analyze component or complete product designs with individual initiative.

  • Must be able to direct the work of drafters, designers and technicians.

  • Must have demonstrated a high level of productivity and competency in the execution of duties.

  • Must be able to work directly with vendors, contract resources, and internal and external experts in design process.

  • Must be able to design and follow electrical products through IEC, C.S.A., UL, and other applicable safety, industry or Toro internal standards certifications.

  • Specific experience implementing technologies such as: BLDC motors, lithium batteries and BMS, connectivity (CAN, wireless), or Automation of mobile equipment is preferred.
