Salary:  Starts at $28.82 - $34.23 per hour (Depending upon qualifications)

Benefits: Qualifies for full-time benefits date of hire

Location: City Center

Hours:  Standard business hours (7am-3:30pm), may vary based on business needs

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Streets Division Manager

Public Works Department

The Public Works Department is comprised of Engineering, the Water Treatment Plant, Utility Field Operations, Street Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Environmental Services. The department is responsible for the environmental management, design, construction, and maintenance of the street, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the community. 

Position Responsibilities

The Street Maintenance Operator uses hand tools, power equipment and mechanized equipment to perform a wide variety of maintenance activities within the public right of way including patching, mowing, snow plowing, concrete repair, and street sweeping. The Street Maintenance Operator uses hand tools, power equipment and mechanized equipment to perform a wide variety of maintenance activities within the public right of way including patching, mowing, snow plowing, concrete repair, and street sweeping. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:

  1. Uses strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of maintenance activities using hand, power and heavy equipment including pickups, trucks, compressor/air tools, chainsaws, skid steer loader, and backhoe.
  2. Develops and applies specialized skills to the division needs in such areas as carpentry, welding, advanced repairs; provides training in specialized skill to co-workers and seasonal staff; looks for opportunities to develop and use technical knowledge to support the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  3. Demonstrates safe equipment operation and working conditions in traffic on City streets and entering confined spaces.
  4. Reads maps, performs division record keeping and utilizes computer technology to assist in these activities.
  5. Performs daily preventative maintenance and pre-trip DOT inspections.
  6. Actively participates in educational requirements to maintain appropriate licensing or certificates.
  7. Maintains an excellent driving record and a Commercial Driver’s License (if possess).

Position Requirements

Education: Associate’s degree or two-year technical degree not required, but preferred; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class B) with air brakes and tanker endorsement is required on start date; a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class A) with air brakes and tanker endorsement is required within 6-months of employment.

Work Experience: Minimum of two years of related experience preferred; other trade experience preferred in concrete, road construction, landscaping, welding, electrical, etc.

Physical Effort: Occasionally exertion of force in excess of 50 and/or up to 100 pounds to move objects or equipment accessories is required.  Must be able to exert 20-50 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in a field environment involving working inside and outside of vehicles.  Seasonal conditions can include excessive heat or cold.  Conditions can include working in wet, muddy, slippery or dusty and windy conditions. At these times there may be intermittent
