This leadership position is responsible for ensuring the uninterrupted flow of production material to support production processes. The Materials Planning Manager oversees the Materials Planning function responsible for monitoring inventory levels, expediting material, and auditing material adjustment transactions to support a minimum inventory production process. The Material Planner coordinates the planning, scheduling and releasing of sourced components to effectively support company objectives in inventory, sales volume, product cost, scheduling, and demand.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Coordinates planning of all purchased parts for the site. Makes decisions to release, firm, cancel, or defer work based upon current inventory, demand, and capacity. Responsible for maintaining appropriate inventory levels to support production plan.
Conveys site requirements to supplier base to manage material supply to ensure on time deliveries. Ensuring materials meet specifications, quality standards, and are cost-efficient. Expedites or defer materials as dictated by changes in internal and external customer requirements and to meet production and inventory objectives.
Coordinates internally regarding production goals, timelines, and supplier payments.
Leads the development of strategies for materials planning and SIOP
Provides leadership support in planning capacity and fulfillment demand with plant manufacturing operations
Partners with Materials leadership and manufacturing team in the development of monthly production volume planning using the business forecast, inventory position, actual customer orders, and the defined capacity parameters
Establishes, monitors, and tracks appropriate metrics to drive results and continuous improvement.
Develops strategies and tactics to effectively manage inventory levels with the intention of minimizing costs and improving overall materials performance.
Monitors and maintains accurate purchase order information in the ERP system. Recommends modifications to order release due dates, quantities, and purchase order closure based on planning demand.
Monitors flow of engineering changes to ensure ECN instructions are clear and compiled. Works through the Materials Planners to stop procurement of material affected by change. Establishes effectivity dates and monitors inventory levels of new and old parts to minimize cost impact.
Represents Production Planning and Analysis at various meetings and relays related information to production planning and analysis staff. Collects information, complies into standard formats, prepares monthly reports and other management reports as required
Analyzes demand plan with respect to capacity and material requirements.
Manages inventory levels and provides advice on overages and/or shortfalls of inventory and any availability constraints.
Directs and assist suppliers to assure material is shipped in accordance with the material release and that correct communication of shipment is attained. Monitors and corrects all advanced shipping notice transmissions.
Provides input to schedules, inventory reports, surplus stock lists, production specifications, and plant capacity data as requested. Assists with maintaining records of in-house and on order.
Bachelor’s degree (BA, BS) in Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Business or similar field, with a master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in Material Requirement Planning Systems or a minimum of ten years combined experience of at least two of the following areas: Production Scheduling, Production Control, Inventory Control, Material Expediting or Warehouse Management. A minimum of 4 years direct supervisory experience required.
Strong organizational, interpersonal and team building skills. Must have direct supervisory experience.
Strong management, communication, and leadership skills. Should be motivated with a positive attitude, with ability to work in a group/team setting
Progressive experience in manufacturing environment demonstrating growth in position and/or responsibility
Experience implementing various material signaling concepts such as kanban, min/max, ROP, MRP
Proven experience implementing Lean material flow concepts, systems and tools such as Plan for Every Part (PFEP), pull systems, supermarkets, scheduling boards, Tugger routes, etc.
Strong analytical skills with the demonstrated ability to analyze multifaceted, complex situations, problems, and concepts
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds
Highly self-motivated and directed, able to work well under pressure, manage and prioritize multiple initiatives concurrently, attend to details, and meet deadlines
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to be flexible, adaptable, and change priorities and direction as needed, allowing for optimum effectiveness
Ability to coach and mentor others
Aptitude and desire to gain understanding of situations, processes, and procedures in an effort to improve them
Experience with MRP and ERP systems
Systems experience with shop floor control
APICS or other Materials Planning certification
Experience with Lean principles, tools, and systems such as Value Stream Mapping, Material Flow, Visual Management, Standard Work, Change Over, Root Cause Analysis
Previous experience with weld, paint, assembly, injection molding or extrusion processes preferred
IBP/SIOP experience in a supply planning capacity
Lean practitioner and/or Six Sigma certification
Ability to travel up to 10%
Participate in Materials organization planning
Liaison with suppliers concerning their, quality systems, material schedules or rejected components
Ability to walk and stand throughout working hours, up to 10 hours
Manufacturing setting with moving equipment and varying lighting, temperature, and noise levels
Typical office environment as it pertains to lighting, temperature, and noise level
Ability to work up to 50% of time in manufacturing and Distribution Center environment to collaborate with teams and identify/implement improvements
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse, and to handle other computer components
