Location: City Center

Hours: Standard business hours (8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.), will vary with after-hours City meetings and events. Must be available 24/7 to respond to emergencies.

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Communications Manager

Communications Division

The Communications Division supports all City departments/divisions and is responsible for leading the City’s overall communication and marketing efforts. The team ensures timely distribution of accurate, relevant information to residents, businesses and employees in a manner that reflects the City’s high professional standards.

Position Responsibilities

The Communications Coordinator supports City departments/divisions in their communication and marketing efforts in collaboration with team members. The role requires high-level strategic and tactical skills in all areas of marketing and communications.

The Communications Coordinator is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:

  1. Creates and implements strategic marketing and communication plans for various Citywide and individual department programs, including revenue-generating initiatives.
  2. Writes content for publication externally and internally, including the City newsletter, news releases, website and social media, and the employee intranet.
  3. Manages design and production process for City publications, and printed and digital marketing materials, oversees graphic designer and assigns work to Assistant Communications Coordinator.
  4. Identifies opportunities to develop and expand City’s online tools, digital engagement and social media efforts.
  5. Serves as back-up public safety PIO, facilitates media inquiries, and provides related counsel to elected officials, department directors and City staff.
  6. Leads efforts related to video and podcast production, and City meeting broadcasts.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field required; professional accreditation or master’s degree desirable.

Work Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in strategic marketing and communications, including writing, project management, media relations and crisis communications required.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and thorough knowledge of the below required:

  • Strategic marketing and communications discipline
  • Creating and producing marketing collateral
  • Leading complex projects from conception to completion
  • Social media strategies and content management systems
  • AP Style

Physical Requirements: Physical effort is light for the majority of work with lifting or carrying limited to 25 pounds intermittently. There are occasional visits to City Department locations and off-site meetings. Must periodically be available at disturbing fire and police scenes. There is a need to make presentations, which involves public speaking in front of City leaders, to the public and the media. Between 15-45% of the time there is pressure associated with a project or activity deadline. Report preparation and writing at times requires extended use of a keyboard. Work interruptions are frequent

Working Conditions: Most work is done in an office environment.
